Ship Talk - Origin 135C Review

While research for the 3.11 Mining Guide is ongoing, Subscribers and Concierge got a chance to try out the 100 Series in PTU. To begin with, anyone that knows me on Discord or the Forum knows I do not like Origin that much. I prefer other brands(CRUSADER!) and feel that CIG has squandered a large amount of interior space in ships like the 600i for no other reason than to have room without function. But that’s not what this is about. Seeing as how we were given access to the ship, I decided to take a look, if only to know where things are on the ship should I find myself in one one day. I will give praise where it is due though and the 135C knocks it out of the park for what it aims to achieve. This is my quick review of the ship in its current state.

Styling, Look & Visibility

What can I say? It looks like an Origin ship and has all the hallmarks for one. The ship is long and smooth with few protrusions. Thrusters are clearly visible along the hull while the main engines blend in perfectly to the rear of the ship. Its wings are not too large but also not insignificant with smaller vertical wings raised on the ends as additional atmospheric control surfaces. The tail of the ship has the distinctive spoiler found on the 300 series ships but it is featured less prominently. The coloring on the ship is somewhat new but follows the new styling of the base variant being white, the combat variant being black, and the last variant being blue. This is the same with the new G12 rover by Origin. It’s a good color and the red accents make it stand out but I’m not sure if it’s the best that could have been used. Maybe an electric blue would have been better. The Origin logo on the ship feels out of place with its size and location. I feel other choices could have been made in its regard. It distracts from the ship.

The ship is entered from the left side just ahead of the wing with the Origin logo. A light grey panel will open the ship and provide stairs. The ship sits low enough to the ground that only three are needed. This makes entrance and exit very easy compared to the 300 Series.

Stepping up to the ship’s door gives an excellent view of the interior. The bed and cockpit are the main features of the interior:

The bed can not retract and can get in the way sometimes but enough room is provided to the side to get at the rear components and cargo area with relative ease. The Power Plant and Shield Generators are in this area but the Quantum Drive is accessed outside on the left side of the nose. The Coolers are accessed outside under the winds. Thank you @Ayeteeone for that tip. If there’s anything that lets the ship down in here it’s the pilot’s chair. It is very plain compared to other Origin ships but this and the bed’s lack of style can be attributed to its ‘Starter’ classification. At the rear of the interior are the components and a small cargo area. This cargo area is the same for all 100 Series ships and holds 2 SCU. I wonder if we can eventually shield it from scans? Hmm?

The Bubble-glass cockpit is the most distinctive feature though providing great vision for the pilot. It’s only truly let down by the two ‘bars’ which create a thin, smaller window below the main viewing area. If this was removed or minimized it would be perfect. Other than that there’s not much else to talk about for the interior.

Finally the landing gear. I’m not a fan of the landing gear wheels. They look off and I think skids should have been used but I can see why the wheels would be an advantage ‘in universe’ .

Capabilities & Stuff

The 135C is the cargo variant of the 100 Series. It can hold a total of 6 SCU of cargo. 2 in the ship’s interior and 4 in the rear between the engines. The addition of the ramp is a welcome addition as it means that multiple courier boxes can be put in here and are easily accessed. I can easily see this becoming a favorite shuttle for players, even over something like the Avenger.

The ship’s normal SCM speed is 190m/s and tops out at 1095 m/s. It’s the slowest of the 100 Series. It maneuvers well enough for a cargo ship and can get up to speed relatively quickly but can not spacebrake nearly as well as something like a Pisces meaning turn-and-burn will be needed to quickly slow the ship at high speed. The 135C has a quantum fuel tank of 700 units meaning it has the endurance to cross the entire system depending on the Quantum Drive used. Special note should be given to the ship’s intake system:

From my own personal flying, I have to say this system works as advertised. The ship recovered hydrogen fuel very rapidly after maneuvers and didn’t seem to lose any while getting in and out of the atmosphere on Yela.

The ship is equipped with two S2 M4A Laser Cannons on gimbals but can mount S3 fixed weapons if so desired. It also has 2 StikeForce II missiles. Its Size 1 stock component complement is all Industrial, Grade C which leaves a lot of room for different fittings to be tried. The ship has a lot of potential but it should avoid combat as it is only a Starter cargo ship.

Closing Thoughts

I feel CIG makes many good ships, there’s no doubt. CIG makes a few great ships but CIG rarely makes a perfect ship. This is one of them in my opinion. It joins the Pisces on my list of perfect ships. Again, I don’t really care for Origin as I said but this is a ship I’ll get in the next sale. It’s perfect at what it does and can do beyond that. Its ergonomics from entering the ship to the ease of accessing various compartments is spectacular. In short, the 135C is a must buy for me and I recommend it. to anyone looking for that small shuttle/courier.

I must now scream because I finally like an Origin ship. Excuse me.

@Black Sunder Coolers are accessible on the underside of the wings.

My opinion - it's cool and will have a place. But did we need 7 single seat Origin ships? I suppose.. there are at least that many Hornet variations :/

It's a legit upgrade to the classic starters, and depending on how the AIR system is implemented they may find a unique role.

My Kingdom for a 415p. (spoiler; would not be a fair trade)

A really good review @Black Sunder, a good "documentation" on this ship.
I don't hown this ship but seeing how it came out I regreat don't puchase it when it came out as a starter pack, this ship has a whole new level of personaity.

Shape side it remind me a surfboard, don't know why... I'm not a fun of the bigger Origin logo butt I've to admit it fall right in spot on what I feel is the in-lore target" of this ship: young guys with same degree of financial capability that'll like a sportish ship to hang around with chics.
Really, the surfboard remind, the big giant logo, even the electrical blue of the AIR system and remind me of the touch that automotive producer use on low end sportish car that appeal teenager... not a bad thing by the way.

The only "problem" with this ship is that the 135c is a direct competitor of his own sister 100i: it has the exact same specs execpt that the 135c also have 4 SCU of additional cargo, a bad move IMHO...
I'll expect that the cargo variant will trade at least the missiles for the additional cargo, while it's not...
Also the 125a is a bad commecial move: it has the same cargo space of the standard 100i but with more missile capacity.... I'm confused:drunk:

By the way: two S3 hardpoint on a small starter ship??? that could be an interesting light combat ship, it defenetly more interesting then an Aurora LN (more firepower) or a Mustang (more ship capability anf phisicalize cargo area). I'll see this ship became the next favourite starter ship hands down.

It also can't land in a Carrack (@Stevetank for the reference) at least not in the top landing deck. If it could, I might consider one as the shuttle. No idea whether you could stuff one in the loading ramp.
Really?? Hmm yes considering how the Pisces fit in this seam to be too long and too wide...🤔
Haven't see it in-game yet, but feels not so smaller then a 300_series

Nicely done @Black Sunder very good review. After flying the ship today I will add that I'm hoping the handling is an error. It's nowhere near the same maneuverability and agility of the 300 series and based on its size and profile, I'd expect it to be more maneuverable.

It gives more options for starters and low cost runabouts, so always a good thing I think. I like my 325a quite a lot, so much that I've been debating buying it in the pledgestore so I can get one customized. So, while I've not had the chance yet to mess with the 100 series, I could see how they could be appealing.

It looks nice. I have my LN for the PEW and 'aint nothing is getting rid of War Rocket Ajax, except it being blown up as it's not insured, but the 135c might be taking the place of my LX which once again is currently melted... dat leather seat tho...

I did get the 135C and put the glack/grey skin on it. Works like a charm.
I got the 135c in the original concept drive and was looking side-eye at my 350r thinking it might be redundant now or the 300 series will be in need of a huge drastic rework...

Having flown the 135 now, I can say the 350 is safe in my hangar from being melted for the moment - looking at the two craft side-by-side it is now pretty obvious that the 300 is a step up in abilities - speed, range, cargo capacity, weapons etc. I was feeling the 100 series may be taking the 300's place as starter, however it's now clear the 300 is a Teir 2 or maybe even Tier 3 ship. 100 nose is very pretty in comparison to the 300's though, a nice link to the 890j.

I like the look of those paint jobs on those 100's, but I'm not sure if i'd end up keeping it. It's excellent, but I have an Aurora for a single-seater run-around ride and you gotta have an Aurora for the GLORY of TEST although I did find the Test roundel in the rear wheels landing gear door on the 100 so that might count? ;)

I got the 100i as I figured it would be a nice run about, and I am honestly not really disappointed in its abilities. Well besides it almost fitting in the Carrack.
