Hi Guys,

Long time since I've checked in. Wanted to get advice on a budget limited build I'm looking to put together and get your thoughts on how well it would run SC as I've not had a machine capable of running it for a long time.

Below is what I've priced together on pcspecialist.ie, 1,500 ish euro is what I'm limiting myself to. I may end up sourcing and building it myself to save more but my work also doesn't afford me a lot of time to do that. The OS I am sourcing myself through work.

Let me know what you think.

Try and go for 32gb ram if you can. SC uses more than 16GB even now let lone in a year or two time.

Other than that looks ok. You can always upgrade the GFX card down the line to next gen one.

Power supply is a bit low too it's fine as it is but i'd rather a 650w

Yeah I was thinking that, do you feel like going for an i9 over an i7 is worthwhile in this case?

Well you can't go wrong with either really it depends on your budget. My budget on my new build was tight so I went with the Ryzen 3700x. It's doing a good job way more powerful than my old I7 3770k. There's no doubt the i9 is the fastest especially if you overclock to 5 gig.

Yeah with my budget limit, if I went for an i7 instead i could increase ram and power and still be on target.

Pretty close to my setup, MSI-MEG motherboard Z390 with i9-9900K 64GB DDR4 corsair vengeance 6GB GTX1660 Ti Pro That also have additional 32GB DDR4 it can use if the 6GB is not enough.
Of cause system is M.2 SSD dedicated SSD for SC and one for other stand alone games and programs and one for steam ...

( going to upgrade later on to 2080Ti later gen... or new what ever they come up with )

Work like a charm on anything I push in to it..

Sidenote:
I need the amount ram cause of video editing and 3D I mess around with when not playing..
But damn does that much ram make difference in gaming to :D

I'd go for the i7 and 32ram, with a better PSU for safety and stability in the long run.
That 500gig is gonna fill up in seconds, you are going to chuck in some HDDs sooner or later, and you will need the extra wattage to carry it.

Yeah, I would personally replace i9 with i7 (similar frequency, overclockable or not) and use money saved this way on better GPU, like 2070 Super (or next-gen 3xxx RTX), if I had a limited budget.
And the guys are right, 32GB would be very helpful, the same as an additional HDD.

I can second (third, fourth, fifth? I dunno how many people I'm agreeing with) with the i7 and the extra RAM, and that 2070 Super is a pretty big upgrade from the 2060 for not that much money. I just built a new rig myself, Ryzen 3800X, RTX2070Super and 32gb of RAM, and it was a huge huge huge improvement over the old i7 3770K and SLI GTX980 i was running before. For what it's worth, I think the rig you're looking at will play SC as well as any other computer out there. Just don't expect a solid 60FPS at all times, since this game isn't optimized at all yet, and you'll be pleased!!

Yes indeed, you get solid fps when server is running good if you don't then fault is not on your end..
but with that setup and a fair to good server you get smooth sailing easy with that setup.

Yeah take it your internet connection is not from the 90's that is :P 🍻

2070 super isnt that much better than the 2060 take a look at the charts you are only gaining maybe 8 fps for 100usd.

ah my bad i didnt see that you were talking about normal 2060 that is a pretty big difference then (18-26% difference) but he could always go with the 2060 super also which may be better overall in his wallet.

Yeah but I got the i9 9900K and man does 64GB of ram make a difference, compared to 32GB even if the 32 was great and worked super fast to, it can't be compared.
It's like I had a F1 car now I got a rocket, over all loading time on SC is about 15-20sec at the most and that is on a fair good server of cause.
Once inside PU CPU is working way less with so much more ram, change in all programs and game I play is so huge I might even go for 128GB to max it out.
Best upgrade I done was to go from 32 to 64GB.. never going back to less than 64GB ever again.

i agree the ram increase will help system performance more but you gotta think ahead if he finds later that his cpu and motherboard is not good enough he will have to replace the parts all together. Thats a big waste of money. On the other hand if he gets 16gb or 32 gb ram he can just add 2 more sticks later or more depending on the board he gets so he doesnt have to toss out his ram hes currently buying. The I9 will go alot futher and is quickly becomming the new standard for gaming machines and will be viable for much longer.

True in the way of saving a buck you would stick with 32GB, but 16GB is not enough any more and would create a bottle neck in performance.
And yeah upgrading to i9 before adding ram would be good if you have 32GB already.

But then DDR4 RAM will not go out of stock anytime soon and will probably be around long enough to even have time to save up for a all new computer.
Then you can sell unused ram when upgrading or use it for a new build like streaming machine or just a computer for communication and surfing the web.
So nothing need to be tossed away that's just silly ha ha... many ways to use unused computer parts.
