I've been using playstation controllers with my pc since the drivers for PS3 came out. I've not tried it with Star Citizen, but there's no reason to expect it wouldn't work. It might take a little fiddling around, depending on how the game processes controller input. Definitely go with DS4 windows over inputmapper. Vastly easier to use, once you get it set up just right.
Xbox controllers work with most games without needing to adjust anything, though, if you don't mind coughing up the money for one.
