So I've been messing around with DSC World 2.5 since I can't fly for real right now (let my medical certificate lapse while recovering from ACL reconstruction) - REALLY digging it although the dogfighting is much harder than SC due to energy limitations of flying planes vs spacecraft.

Anyway, I managed to score a kill against an F-14 Tomcat in the little F-5E Tiger II I have been enjoying, there is an after mission debriefing tool called TacView that provides great insight into the fight, here is a quick video I put together.

Enjoy

Thanks Glorious Leader!

I suffered a complete tear of my left ACL back in June, surgical repair in October, still in PT. I am an amputee (right foot back in 1983 due to complications of a birth defect - hence 'Gimp) so it has effected my mobility more than I like, slowly coming back now.

I need to schedule an appointment with the Flight Surgeon and also need to complete a flight review, maybe 2-3 weeks if I press now.

I pre-ordered the F-18 module and own the A-10C and F-15E. I was looking at the F-5. How do you like it? Always looking for people to train with, too- since I don’t have the balls to go on a public server yet.

Yes, it was much harder/complicated/realistic than SC. And it was the most intense simulator I've ever experiened with HTC Vive.

Still loved one of very expensive DLCs I bought: a M-2000C (56,61€ via Steam store), pretty hard to fly but you'll get used to it after hours of practicing and it's good plane for beginners who likes the "fully clickable cockpit". :D

Here's my Mirage-2000 with "Spirit of Fire" skin:
(Joystick used: T-16000m FCS, recorded with NVIDIA ShadowPlay)

@Metal-Muffin I can't comment on the other mods since the Tiger is the first one I have purchased but based on my 20-ish years of flight simming in general as well as being a licensed Commercial Pilot in the real world I agree with @Snakey that the F-5E is probably the best 'introductory' aircraft going.

The flight model is, from what I know of the real world Tiger, pretty accurate, the systems are very well modelled, and it can go from initial flight training all the way through BFM, ACM, A2G and SES missions.

It teaches you to be an effective combat/strike pilot without all the gizmos and automation that come with the more advanced aircraft which I think could make for some laziness (caused by the extremely steep learning curves). It is a nimble little minx but she lacks what the fighter guys call specific excess power or SEP, it is very quick to lose energy when maneuvering, and very slow to rebuild it which makes fighting AI very tough.

It also has some striking skins, I really like the VFC 13 Splinter skin.

I am using TrackIR 5/TrackClip Pro and still need to work on the curves, I strained my neck trying to check six during several engagements last night.

The new T.16000M-HOTAS I got is awesome, very immersive and pretty handy - tried it in SC last night and think I may move to a gamepad for EVA/Foot and could be almost completely HOTAS when in ships.

Next step for me in DCS is to get smart on the multiplayer systems for DCS (Discord, SimpleRadio and the servers) and venture out into the wild world of sports that it can be - probably start with the Cold War and Formation servers initially - might even try to find a squadron to fly with.

I am also going to add the two campaigns for the F-5E and NTTR scenery, which are BFM and ACM training modules to help me feel better about my fighting ability (the AI is wrecking me).

My family has a long history with the Navy and Marines so I am going to stick with USN/USMC aircraft, will definitely add the Hornet for sure when it comes out, possibly the Tomcat (it looks awful complicated to employ), and am interested in the community developed A-4 Skyhawk as well. If/when the F-4 comes out I'll probably add it too since I have a soft place in my heart for the Phantom.

Get the F-5E, you won't regret it.

I am super excited for the f18 module. I’m a a10c and black shark 2 dcs vet. But I haven’t flown in years and the x65f is still collecting dust. I need to get the new 2.5 and all the Vegas stuff. Maybe even the harrier. I used to host a public server years ago if I get the time I can always host a public or private server for test.

So after reading this, I think to myself that looks awesome. I grab it on Steam and after 20 minutes of training am throttling up to take off in the Mustang...

Frad's noble attempts at defying gravity, god, and all those smug winged rats in Chicago who've tried to poop on me while swooping over head...
  1. Wheels get light and I roll into the wing,
  2. Try number two, engine won't start... oh yeah helps to turn on the fuel.
  3. With fuel turned on and trim tweaked, I roll into the other wing
  4. Getting annoyed I say screw the runway set the parking brake gun engine and as the nose starts to lower pop the brakes and roll right into a parked helicopter. This is why you zig zag while taxiing.
  5. Fire up Star Citizen and do a cargo run of distilled spirits.
DCS vexes me and I see many hours being spent rolling into the wings of my Mustang.

YES!

Test DCS Squadron, Best DCS Squardon

Let us make this happen!

It’ll take me some time Astro but be patient with me and I’ll get us a dedicated up. I got a spare tower not being used. Hopefully it’s still powerful enough to run the dedicated software. And worst case scenario I’ll have to upgrade and buy the newer modules. Now if only I can remember how to crank my a10c lol.

When dogging dog fighting, use terrain and altitude to solve the energy lost turning problem

I may be reading this wrong, but it seems counterintuitive. Do you mean, use altitude [nose down] to help mitigate power loss and terrain to mask/inhibit shot options of altitude is not available?

Yes, I think Snakey is saying, correctly, that in a power limited fighter like the F-5E you have to trade altitude for speed and you can use terrain in some cases to force overshoots, hard deck violations, even controlled flight into terrain (crash) onto your opponent. And yes, terrain masking as well as 'notching' are real techniques in DCS for defeating missiles in particular but also avoiding snap shots with guns, etc.

My issue is trying to balance all of that along with getting and maintaining a visual on the target, and such - it really is complicated and substantially more difficult than our 6 degrees of freedom dogfights in SC where we are not faced with the drag of an atmosphere adding to the energy loss from maneuvering.

Use terrain to force the enemy to concede to your turn rate and try to gain altitude before a fight
