When your vehicle starts to get worn out you trade it in, in the real world.

Yet we wouldn't do that in Star Citizen?

You miss something important: "right now"
Treading ship in will be thing: it has been announced far back and I don't see it being scrapped along the way.
Plus there will be some rapair gameplay: I'll expect that ship degradaation will be treated similar to component degradation, so you'll be able to repair it...


And don't forget that in this first implementation the "degradation" is just a visual effect, nothing that will effect the gameplay right now, so why to concern about it?

How long does it take for a vehicle to degrade? How expensive is it to repair?
Ships should last a LONG time. With proper maintenance, they should last the lifetime of the game

ships ALREADY degrade and you have to repair them when you land, even when no combat occurs.

hulls and components should be serviceable to bring it back to full strength. They should also be field repairable to allow some functional ability to be restored.

it's not just ships, component reliability will degrade with wear and tear

imagine the power plant generating your shields failing randomly after a while

there's a point where 'realism' interferes with gameplay

with only a few hours a week to spend in the Persistent Universe, how much of that time do I want to spend on pre-flight checklists and preventive maintenance?

if CIG's vision of 'total immersion' is as full of dull routines as my real life, why should I bother to log in?

I would expect there to be a limit to a ships degradation, though - I don't think a ship will ever become totally inoperable.

If that's the plan, I counter that if I wanted to watch a vehicle slowly fall apart that I can't afford to fix, I'd go outside and look at my car.

I think that mantenance is the answare here: component will degradate when use them, especially when overclocked probably, so they''l need repair and eventually be exchanged for new one.
I'll espect the same logic apply to other ship component, like trusters: the more you fly, the more you push the truster at maximum, the more you afterburn them the faster they will degradate and start to malfunction.

For paint I'll expect there will be a good ship wash around station and some mantenance procedure for avoid rusting it... like wax for car for example...

There is no Oxygen in space to rust your ship. :)

And rust on a ship is an environmental hazard.

I have two aUEC ships I would love to trade in for something else. :)

Planet does instead... and do not mistake breathable oxigen with the molecular one: for rust to appear you need the second not the first.
And yes, rust is a enviromental azzard, as much as a bullet hole in the hull... CIG confirm hazzard will be implemented.... somethime in the future.

Yes there is oxygene in space (also in extremely small quantitys)
There is also radiation (which is a lot harsher in space than on earth) and small amounts of other molecules to react with.
The fun part is some even are radicals, which are highly reactive, and some can even only exist in space.
Another source of corrosion is sputteriung of the surface by small particles.
Last but not least especially plastics will tend to degas due to the extremely low pressure in space.

If you wait long enough, your vehicle will start increase in value and be called a piece of art or antique. Therefore, an Aurora, crashed enough times, should be worth more if you decide to trade it in. 🍻

Well I wish this will be true, most of, I wish CIG will re-introduce some of the old ship models (with textue and mesh update to keep them in lne with the current "state of art") as historical rare models, this will give players another layer of gameplay with the ability to scout, retrive and eventually restore old iconic ships to collect them... like hystorical car entusiast actually do.

It will be nice to dive into a cave in the middle of nooware to find an old Cuttlass model or an early 300i series and putting up a salvare&restore operation... plus alll the "hystorical ships convetion" tat player could organize in the verse... like a IAE event, but runned by players...:love:

sorry, but for the amount of real life money i paid for some of my ships, if i trade them in then the cost of replacement better be 0 creds

That would be great. I'd probably like to find a historical Connie Aquila and an Aurora.

Never going to happen. Those take up too many game resources and would require extensive revision to bring up to date. All OLD models that were hangar ready but not flight ready are done and gone with. Even ships like the old 300 series will never be seen again because there were things wrong with them that necessitated the change to the newer model to make them work,

Well yes and no...
All the ship are going on a rework to standardise the structure, the entry point, the metrics and implement the phisicalized components, plus bring them up to speed with the manifacturer material and style design.... but that doesn't mean that the old model can be implemented also.
To be clear I don't mean take the old model and put into the game OFC, that whouldn't work, but the old style and shape could probably be re-implemented with minimal if no adjustment on the design.
Of course the whole process whould mean basically design a new ship with the old look, so that is not something we whould see in the short time (if ever), but I don't see so much tacnical problem in it...
