Pulled the trigger on an EVGA RTX 3080. I think I developed a syndrome during the last year from seeing insane GPU prices because when I saw that $799 price tag my first thought was "So cheap! How am I this fortunate?!"

By far the most money I've spent on a GPU and it's the first piece of a new gaming rig I'll be building over the next 6 months.

Right now planning on pairing it with an i5 12600k. Anyone run this combo? Any CPU bottlenecking?

Anyway, was curious if anyone else pounced on a GPU now that they've come back down to earth. 🍻:o7:

Congrats on your purchase!

The cheapest new one I could find locally is about 1100 usd for an Asus 12gig 3080.
I was looking to get a 3070 ti (Gigabyte, 850usd here) which should still work without having to change my PSU and it's a good enough upgrade for my money from a 2060S, although I would prefer keeping both in the machine for 3D rendering. That would require me getting a better PSU anyways, so I'm considering going with a 3080 instead depending on pricing, as currently they are close enough but that might shift in favor of the 70. The 12gig would make it easier to render sims though... but I don't dare to commit at the moment.
Even tough prices came down to earth, our currency (HUF) crashed real hard, we got 20% inflation and it's only gonna get worse, so I'm on a holding pattern for now.

12600K sounds like a good choice! I got a 10700K so I can't tell you if it would bottleneck. Probably not as it supports the latest PCIE standard.

If they think I can afford anything more expensive than a teenagers first car they can think again. I could get two cars for what they are sking for these GPUs and that's after prices have stabilised.

I used the money I've spent on my fleet to justify the money I was spending on a new gaming rig

Similar to a quality optic on a quality rifle

How am I supposed to yell at the janitor on my BMM for forgetting to dust if I'm not viewing it in 4k?

Then when he/she quits, I can switch to 1440p. Dust is harder to see and I'll have higher frames.

I was initially planning on a 3060 but my mouse cursor just kind of migrated to the 3080 and started clicking until a screen with "Thanks for your order!" popped up.

It's all kind of a blur.

I'm also missing some Glenmorangie from that night. My wife denies drinking it but she's lied to me before. One time she said she didn't want anything for her bday. Yeah. Nice try.

I was pretty excited to purchase an EVGA 3080 12gb on Jan 17th (6 days after release) for $1400. I was lucky and got into EVGA queue within 5 minutes. Looking at prices today, I don't feel so lucky.

Yeah but you've gotten to use it for 6 mths so it's not all bad.

Plus, there are people who've spent way more on a 3080 than 1400

How have you liked it so far?

I just picked up an EVGA 850w Supernova G6 PSU so I'm literally amped to try this thing out

All I heard was "Steal teenagers broke ass car and sell for scrap in order to feed my gaming addiction."
Next, push grandma down stairs for insurance claim, daddy needs a new CPU to go with that GPU.

EVGA queue worked for me, though I wasn't so early. Still, after being patient for 427 days, got the email about 6 months ago and nabbed my 3080 for MSRP. I feel like I did my part to #stopthescalp, so I'm very happy about that. I did really need it though, my monitor is 5120x1440, and I'd previously been trying to push all those pixels with a 1070, and yeah it just wasn't cutting it, even after dropping everything to 1080p instead. New 3080 finally cuts the mustard though, and I can get my full 7.3M pixels flickering at a respectable 60-100 fps ! And scalpers be damned!

I'm dreading buying a monitor for this thing.

Leaning towards a 1440 ultrawide. 166hz 1ms or better

I really want a 4090 when it comes out. Right now rumor has it that they have a backstock of 3k series gpu's beause of the crypto crash and mining becoming less viable. From what I understand, Nvidia placed their order with TSMC for chips before the crash happened, so it really messed up their projections. The market for GPU's is much smaller with the crypto bros out of the picture, so I'm hoping they have an oversupply of 4k chips at launch. These prices on the 3k series right now are a good indication that the rumors might be true.

In the meantime, I'm worried I might be wrong and not get a 4k card until mid next year. I'm eyeing the prices on these cards and its so tempting to pull the trigger. The money will be better spent on the 4090 if I just have the patience to wait it out though.

Yeah, the 4000 series will definitely be superior. 4090 should be the easiest to acquire due to the high price. Less people are willing to cough up that kind of cash.

I'm planning on playing at 1440, personally. 3080 is already a bit overkill for that with room for 1440 to get more intensive as they add more effects.

I'd be jelly of a 4090! Don't think you'd regret it! 🍻 :o7:

I agree 1440 makes for a pretty nice sweet spot, though in addition to the pixel height you also need to give consideration to the WIDTH, as you get more choices there! Obviously I subscribe to the 'wider is better' mentality, so my take is 4k be damned and the Samsung G9 is the best gaming monitor money can buy right now. I was (at the time, 2019) willing to drop down to 120hz and 2ms GTG in order to get the monster 32:9 aspect ratio. If that seems a bit TOO extreme for you though, I'd still strongly suggest you consider the 21:9 options. A 3080 will cut 3440x1440 at >120hz, and is quite glorious!

Rumor is that due to overproduction of the 40xx series chips and backstock of 30xx, NV is pushing back the launch of 40xx cards. They gotten real greedy seeing what happened with the 30xx launch as evidenced by their refusal to produce more 30xx cards during the shortage, so they will try for more artificial scarcity with the 40xx cards. I'm not a fan of this but they still are the only real option if you do more than just game with your card.
