This does add to the complexity of the situation. The other is that small ships might not have enough firepower to penetrate the shields and/or armor and so while they can't be hit by the large/capital ship they can't do anything against it. Even ships like the Constellation would just be easy...

How small can we go?

It is possible for larger ships to land shots on smaller ships. But this takes into account that all ships are out in empty clear space. The little ship is far enough out that its speed cannot translate to large enough degrees of arc travel on the larger ship that its turrets are able to keep...
