This goes back to my tethering idea... you could slow the tumble of your ship by giving up some of your own ships's inertia to the tumbling ship to balance it. If you were to simply match the tumble with your own ship without stopping it, you could potentially create a situation where everyone...

Why not just simply use a tractor beam as a grappling hook to "hang on" to the other, larger, ship? The equivalent of your kid grabbing onto your leg while you are trying to walk.
