I may not be the first one to think of this, but my absolute favorite book that I have read over a dozen times is "Ready Player One" and I thought that the concept of the story could really play well here.
In game you would have 3 hidden "cryptokeys" in the verse for players to find. Also a final hidden Easter Egg that any player can find if they've acquired the final cryptokey, but only one player can claim the egg, the final prize.
These cryptokey missions or challenges would be ridiculously hard to find and complete to attain the next cryptokey to get the next clue.
Each cryptokey attained would allow the user to read the clue in their accepted mission log to try and find the next challenge or mission, much like how the book plays out. Again, the clues have to be very vague. No exact locations or what the mission entails.
Every player that logs in would have the very first clue in their accepted missions log. It has to be difficult to decipher, leading the player to a challenge or mission that is nearly impossible to find or complete (maybe in a remote location into the sites of an elite pirate in a fighter with ridiculously strong shields and very lethal weapons? Bad enough where if he lands 2 shots on your Mustang Alpha or Aurora, your dead.) When the 1st mission or challenge is completed, that player would receive the 1st cryptokey with the next accepted mission clue along with a UEC award of lets say 500k? An example of the first clue could be, Mission: The Hunt for Pirate Assassin - Name and whereabouts unknown. Frequently found to kill from rocky areas above and below.
When a player eventually finds the the third key a final clue of where to find the final location of the Easter Egg would be revealed; that Easter Egg would only be available to the first player to find it and only if they've already found all 3 cryptokeys. The mission or challenge has to be unbelievably difficult but not impossible and should include a needed fact of lore of the game. A piece of the puzzle.
The prize would be a large monetary amount to be won by a single player would drive people into the game to look for it. The prize would have to be something substantial that would make the news but not too crazy, say maybe 10 or 20k? Possibly a 100k?
Ok, maybe not a 100k until the vastness of the verse surpasses a dozen different systems. Eventually, if this was really popular and the verse was profoundly huge, like over 100 star systems, maybe the Egg prize could be a million dollars?
If you ever read the book, I could then see that Star Citizen would have a population to beat all the MMO populations combined.
Only one dev would know where it is, the one that would code it into the game. Also anybody that works for or related to the anyone that works for Cloud Imperium Games would be ineligible.
What do you think?
