Yes. Cannon Fodder.
Now before we start, this is just for fun and discussion.

ON-WARDS!

So with ships like the P-52 and the "Bikes" I had the thought that it would be pretty interesting if there was some series of "old" ships (lore-wise) that lacked shield generators and relied on armor plating alone. Now we have some light-weight ships when it comes to shields and taking a hit, but we also read about some ships like the Terrapin.

The Terrapin, which has - "extensive shield systems and armor layers designed to provide the maximum possible defense" - is similar to what I mean.

The idea being some sort of a co-ship from the Terrapins time or even prior, a quick-built and mass produced ship that met basic requirements for combat during a desperate time when losses were high and manufacturing the same advanced ships to be destroyed would take to long. A sort of "Last Resort" production ship, my thinking would have it be "decently" maneuverable but completely un-shielded, instead having obvious thick armor plating all over the ship with old robust looking thrusters capable of taking a hit and still working for some time.

Lore-wise it would have been piloted by rookies and quickly trained replacements, It would be small, boxy, and mount heavy ballistic weapons and some missiles giving it a chance at taking down several enemies before probably being shot to pieces.

Probably made by Anvil as well since it fits their style of flying tanks, basically a cross between the Hurricane and Terrapin almost. I'd call it the "Aggressor".
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now obviously this doesn't sound super fun to most people, so what if they added this kind of ship but as a retro-fitted update to the now ancient design with improvements to it a whole. Such as some form of shield-generators and improved thrusters and armor at the expense of some of its heavier weaponry? I think it would be a fun addition especially with the idea of carrying LOADS of them on a Bengal or Idris. They would be small but capable, albeit less survivable as a trade-off.

Basically this:

From a lore stand point i would say ships like that would be refurbished, adjusted to the current demand or decommissioned. Just like modern battle ships, tanks etc.

So i would expect at least a minimal shielding or a lower energy power plant which needs a lot time to recharge shields or stuff like that.

Another lore/physics standpoint is armor = mass = slow acceleration and agility. So we might compensate that a little with reduced gear like life support systems, escape pods and maybe a stripped out body.

Who would fly such ships? People who can’t afford modern ships, so probably (NPC) pirates, low level and bad paid headhunters and escort pilots.

What i would like to see is a living and breathing universe and maybe companys bring out new better ships.
So our beloved LTI Super Hornet will age and we need to buy the new SH Mk2 or Mk3.

I would love to see ships like that!
Currently, most ships look way too modern and high-end imho. Pirates and other lowlife characters, settlers, pioneers and ppl down on their luck would want to fly something cheap and preferably simple to operate and repair. Also, it would be nice if we could actually have a fair fight in our starter Auroras against something older/weaker.
I think that SC needs a lot more "junk ships" to make it as "real/living" as CR wants it.

armor = mass

I'd fly it. More Mass = RAMMING SPEEDS!

I mainly thought of it though cuz I'm a nerd, and watch Gundam shows n shit. So this little thing popped up in a clip:

And it wrecked some shit.

So me being the glorious psychopath that I am would happily fly some crazy outdated ship lol

I think it would also be cool if the introduced some of those as vintage ships that are really rare and more of a collector's item. Rather than selling them they could put them out in places to be discovered and then when found fixed up and sold as a vintage ship to some collector for lots of UEE bucks.

Not quite, the Hurricane is a Heavy Fighter sacrificing "comforts" for more firepower. What they mean by "comforts" though I can't say, seat cushions?

I mean a literally shield-less ship from what lore-wise could have been an early UEE War.

The Lore states it's a very old design bought back in the face of the Vanduul war effort.

Energy weapons are made to melt armor like a hot knife through butters, I don't think it would work out very well no matter how thick the armor was.

The original intention for Neutron cannons was to by-pass shields, to balance that they have tragically short range.

Whether they work that way or not now, or in the final game is up to CIG but I am praying for that as my 350r needs something to work with.

.....I like my fodder in the shape of Merlins. Call me old fashioned, but I'd always assumed that energy shields were required if you wanted to travel with a quantum drive. (Tiny space-dust hitting your windscreen at 0.2c is bound to fuck some shit up.) But yes, that sounds fun. What would be funner; A drone carrier spewing unmanned cannon fodder.

I'd like some odd, old, and cheap ships. Things like a space DUI/(FUI?) scooter, a minimal amount of machine with basically just a reactor, quantum drive, and jump computer with a seat strapped to it. Of course somebody will strap some big honken artillery piece on it for shits and giggles so you could have some mobile light artillery deployed with your troops out in advance and beyond fixed artillery positions.
