Luckily I'm north enough to not be bothered by the nightly gunshots. But I do brave the trip south for a couple Sox games a year.

If you avoid the south side and parts of the west side, you'll be pretty safe from gun shots.

South side also includes Gary, East Chicago, and parts of Hammond. A good way to remember it is anything that ends in Heights. Like Chicago Heights, Ford Heights, etc. is rough.
