Great analysis, save he forgot to mention this is a great stealth machine, and if you're mining alone, stealth seems a worthy quality to have.

It's going to be interesting to see just how much stealth will play on enemy engagements given most will be triggered by the system against NPC's. While we can say that NPC's will follow the same rules as players but when it comes to game design there is often cheats put in place to have the game engage the player. It's entirely possible that stealth will reduce the random encounters but I bet that you would still have pirate npc encounters that will space the ill prepared.

Something that helps miners being more "stealthy" when mining is to scan using the conic direction scanner (zooming the scan), and not doing a bubble scan.

It is much less seen from distance on a planet, than those big radius bubbles from scanner pings.

Griefers like to roam and check for those big bubbles pings :)

With prospector, as long as you swap to Eclipse stealth powerplant, your EM drops from 30k to 10k while mining & maneuvering. I'd say that's pretty stealthy as well, considering you'll be on some random spot right at the surface of the planet or at like a million meter wide asteroid belt.

Interestingly enough, I did some math here:

Take daymar, it has ingame radius of 295km, which conveniently gives us 1.09mil sqkm surface area.
If you are landed on the planet mining with 10k EM rating and some guy with a ship with s3 radars flies to the planet and stops at 3km height, (this means they'll spot you if you're 9.5 km away along the surface), they'll have 0.026% chance of happening by where you are.
Meanwhile if you had 30k EM rating, spot is 29.85km and it'd be 0.26% chance, yes, 10 times higher for 3x EM. Still abysmally small though, but maybe if they flew around the planet.
The circumference is 1853 km, so if they did a full swirl around the planet, they'd have 1.03% chance of finding a ship with 10k EM and 3.22% chance of finding a ship with 30k EM (interestingly, the more tenacious your opponent is in circumventing the planet or moon, the less benefit you get from having lower EM rating, though even the most tenacious opponent produces a linear chart here.)

In either case, the odds of being found on the surface of the planet are pretty slim. Unless literally the whole server came to search you and paced themselves out evenly, then circumvented the planet you are on.

Surface miners (and mostly anyone near the surface) are found because miners rush in and quantum to the nearest outpost from space then start moving out to find rocks. That is a very minimal distance from an easy reach, and easy to search spot. If you take your time to descend manually and go far away from easy to reach outposts, chances of you being found is basically zero, regardless of you signature, as it is demonstrated by the math by @FZD
"Don't be a lazy idiot" is the best stealth in the game for ground mining, at least for now.
As for in space yeah that's much more different, there you do need the low sig.

The nomads seems like a really great little ship, except that I hate the uninspired shape. The interior is funky but the outside...
