Help me decide on a Retaliator!

So, I really like the Aegis Retaliator. Like a lot. I would really like to own one.

...Only, I'm not sure what I would do with it. These are civilian, stripped-down versions, no? So I'd have to add weapons and such to make it a true bomber again. As it stands now, cargo space is not really on par with true cargo vessels, and way too many guns and engines and armor for practical trading usage. Not to mention, a high crew requirement for full operation.

What would I do with a ship like this? Dangerous trade routes with low-density high-value cargos? Or should we have a few of these so we can one day obtain a TEST Bengal Carrier? Should I just give in and buy the sexy, sexy bomber?

(Serious aside: I will not be putting myself in an untenable financial situation by buying this. I have the money to throw at it without going into debt, and all my other expenses are paid for. I just need a good reason to buy this shiny besides how sexy it is.)

I don't really see a use for the retaliator, besides looking cool. You could get better cargo capacity in a connie or a merchantman. I suppose if you didn't want an idris or a javelin, you could get one of these as a low cost alternative.

That's pretty much the problem. It looks awesome as all get-out, but I can't find a good reason for owning it besides that. I've got better ships for combat, for exploration, for salvage, for VIP escort cruises.

So what it comes down to really, is that I like it and I want it... but I have no practical reason for getting one.

I'm kind of in the same boat right now (no pun intended). I actually would primarily want it as a capital ship destroyer, because torpedoes. :D

Considering it's only speculation right now that we'll get a stripped down, civilian version of it as a cargo hauler variant and Ben has stated that they will try to make some ships modular before PU launch, but it's not high on their to-do list, you should only pick one up right now if you're comfortable with owning it as a dedicated bomber for the time being.

The Retaliator is expected to be easily convertible to milspec. Torpedoes and the like will come standard in Arena Commander, but in the PU we'll have to get the components. Easiest place would probably be the Kilian System.

Well, the issue is we don't know much about it. It may come in a stripped version, but chances are you can simply re-"militarize" it without issue. It will still retain it's plethora of Class 3 hardpoints, so it can still be used as a bomber. Speculatively, it will also have longer range and/or higher armor than a Connie(it is military after all).

As someone else pointed out, it depends on the availability of the Retaliator in the PU as well. I might be able to afford it, but it might be that I have to go hunting it down through multiple systems.

we NEED an anti-cap ship element. Hopefully, we'll be able to buy upgrades to give it the required torpedoes. It will be a fantastically useful ship by then

I'd be shocked if it took more then a few days to refit the torpedoes onto the Retaliator, same with Gladiator. It's just got the torpedo racks taken out of the bomb bays and replaced with some cargo space, not like its an entirely new internal system.

i was going to buy one but a few things held me back. the first being all the points that you brought up here. if it was a military loadout i probably would have gotten it. The other thing that held me back was that it didnt come as a package. The only thing i had before was a connie taurus which came with a pretty nice package. meanwhile this was only a standalone ship so i decided it would be better for me to go with a freelancer mis.

Other than that, as far as i am aware we will be able to buy it in the PU but as for the freelancer mis im not so sure you can since they were built in limited number. they would have to be bought from previous owners or taken as salvaged wrecks. but i could be entirely wrong about this. you might be able to get them just as easily as you can a retaliator

We ( @Montoya , myself, and two of my IRL friends are planning to do something like a "Wing Wednesday" where we run Fleet-wide Retaliator Bombing Runs with Fighter cover and such. I also have been networking with a few Retaliator and Gladiators Pilots from Operation Pitchfork. Anyway so on that note I would advise every 8 of us to get a Retaliator but I do not see it being that hard to earn them in game. I am picking up one and you will always have a seat on my bird Peace, Richard.

I think it would just be really awesome to have an entire TESTBRO Bomber Wing or two hitting a Cap Ship like a Kingship or something, perhaps some astroid Pirate base raids or such, these things really remind me of my favorite Airplane, the B-1B Bomber. Especially, with the TEST ACE Fighters Squadrons covering us.

Also, I am working with a few friends of my to design a Retaliator-inspired Battlestation for our real-life Wing Wednesday's. Ever since we saw the concept version. One of my buddies is a B-1B Bomber Technician for the Air Force. He does not live in the same city as my but I am going to recruit him into TEST when I get a chance. He is really cool guy and will pilot his own bird.

Correct.

But when its released into your hangars,you will be blown away ..
I see the Retaliator progressing every day,and boy oh boy this ship is something else guys.
It'll take a while before its done,but you will not be disappointed. that i promise...

My very talented ship-team here at F42 are working really hard for you guys.
We released the Gladius into the hangar a couple of weeks ago,and the Gladiator is due very ..very..soon :)
The Retaliator is getting there now,another statement of quality work,same as the 2 ships above.
Quality over quantity is our motto,and yes it takes a long time to develop these ships to the quality that we want them to be.
Another thing is we are doing a prototype on a new damage system here at F42,a system that will blow your socks off on visual payoff.. proper high quality art just takes time,even for professionals.. hang in there it'll be worth it people..
