Greetings fellow TESTies!
For each of us the task of upgrading a computer always looms in the future and we look forward to it with both dread and excitement. As much as I've been satisfied with my current computer's performance its starting to show its age. Recently two factors have made me begin the "build a new rig" process: (1) Star Citizen and (2) recently becoming a game streamer on Twitch. Both of which have increased the performance demands on my current rig.
So I thought I'd drop in the beginnings of my new Gaming Rig and share the process for those who are interested in building their own system. I've put together over 8 computers over the years but it's been about 4 years since I built my last one (a 3.3GHz with 8GB RAM, 670ti GPU, Windows 8).
This NEW rig will include the following:
-------------------------------------------------
- ASUS SaberTooth 990FX R2.0 AM3+ USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard
- Kingston Hyper Fury 16GB (2x8) 240 pin DDR3 SDRAM 1866 Memory
- Samsung 850 EVO 250GB SATA III SSD
- NZXT Kraken X-61 280mm Liquid CPU Cooling Solution
- EVGA B2 80 Plus Bronze 850W NVIDIA SLI Power Supply
- Windows 10 Home (64-Bit)
- ASUS DRW-24X DVDRW SATA Black
- NZXT 340 Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Case
Total: Cost for all the above: $699.80
ADDITIONAL STORAGE:
Though not listed I will be adding 1 more additional 500GB Samsung EVO 850 SSD's and possibly (2) 1TB hard drives.
ADDITIONAL MEMORY:
I'll be adding 16GB (2x8) Kingston Hyper Fury to bring the rig to 32GB RAM.
CPU DEBATE:
As far as the CPU and GPU I am considering the AMD 9590 vs the AMD 8370. The wattage use is double that for the 9590 but the processing capability is high in several areas. Currently I can get the 9590 for ($179) $20 less than the 8370 ($199). If anyone has any pro and cons on these two processors I'd love to hear them.
GPU DEBATE
With the release of the new NVIDIA Pascal cards I'm also in a stalemate. The 1080 ($699 MSRP) has exceptional performance numbers but the 1070 ($379 MSRP) brings greater value and covers most ot the demands I would need for probably 90% of my gaming. I'm also anticipating the release of other AMD cards beyond the recently released RX 480 ($199 MSRP) . All these cards should see lower prices over the next few months with 3rd party releases. Again, I'd love to hear opinions regarding this selection.
I'd like to make the additional storage, memory and CPU my next purchase within the next week or two. As much s I'd like to complete this baby yesterday I'm willing to wait a month or two if necessary to make the right purchase regarding the video card. Once I get there I'll post the build process and finished product for you guys.
Thanks in advance and safe flying!
