if you're new,
There used to be a thing called $0 CCUs where CIG allowed you to freely CCU to any ship of the same value.
As time went on and CIG increased ship prices, these $0 CCU's could still be applied so that you would benefit from the price increase they made.
If you melted you would only get back the actual money you paid, not the new total value.
However, CIG seemed to have a problem with this and disabled the $0 sometime (i forgot) between 2017-2018.

If you were smart, and got these $0 CCUs around the anniversary sales of 2016 and prior years...
if you did or did it just because it seemed like a good idea...
you now have a smorgasbord of CCU goodies which you can use on your multi ship packages to essentially not have to pay up to maybe $300 for the destination ship using some CCU upgrade paths.

To know how to use these wisely, reference this webpage
https://starcitizen.fandom.com/wiki/List_of_ship_and_vehicle_prices

The idea is, you apply a purchased CCU to something which has not had a price increase yet,
apply the CCU and then $0 CCU from that to something that has had a price increase.
And then buy a CCU from there to another ship which has not had a price increase.
Rinse and repeat.

Keep in mind, anyone who does this and melts... they will only get RSI credit for money they paid in for the CCU path.
And when it's melted.. that's it.. all these CCU's they've applied are gone forever.
But no money is ever lost that was paid in, so that's a good thing.

Okay so here's some ideas if you have $0 CCUs for these
$150 ship to Khartu-al for +$20 boost
$175 ship to Hurricane for +$15 boost
$175 ship to Starfarer for +$125 boost
$200 Vulcan to Hull C for +$50 boost
$225 Connie Andro to Caterpillar for +$70 boost

Here's an academic example of an CCU upgrade path you could do.
Staring with a base multiship package where you have a $50 valued ship that you want to upgrade to something like a BMM

  • USE $0 CCU $50 ship to reliant kore $65 (+$15)
  • Use an old $15 CCU you saved.. $65 Kore to M50 $100 (+$5) (not sure if this ever existed, but example used academically)
  • You can buy now a $40 CCU $100 M50 to $140 Freelancer Max (-$40)
  • USE $0 CCU $140 Freelancer MAX to Prospector $155 (+$15)
  • You can buy now a $10 CCU $155 Prospector to Gladiator $165 (-$10)
  • USE $0 CCU $165 Gladiator to Super Hornet $180 (+$15)
  • You can buy now a $70 CCU $180 SH to $250 Warden or Redeemer (-$70)
  • USE $0 CCU $250 Warden or Redeemer to BMM $350 (+$100)
Results
you started with a Base $50 ship
You spent $120 on current CCUs
You used an old $15 CCU (kore to m50) that you kept lying around
Applied $145 value boost from $0 CCUs

This is how one could spend $135 for an upgrade to a $350 ship.

If CIG allowed $0 CCUs still.. you could then upgrade from the BMM to any of the concept $350 ships such as a $400 reclaimer or Carrack.
From there, you could save up and CCU to an A2 or Polaris.

I hope you found this little bit of academic discussion interesting.
Thanks for reading.
