P.S. Feel free to tell me that I am over reacting or this is irrelevant or dismiss this post as simple venting. For all I know all those options may be true.

Some time yesterday I came across this post: http://www.reddit.com/r/starcitizen/comments/1wxk57/i_really_hope_that_exploration_in_sc_uses/

And some time ago this post: http://www.reddit.com/r/starcitizen/comments/1wci0s/im_sure_many_of_you_have_heard_about_eves_massive/

and I'm sure there are many more similar posts that bash other games and claim that Star Citizen is the best there is. I have a problem with this. Here are my problems:

Star Citizen is not even out yet and is being compared to not only finished and polished games but to games that have come out 10 years ago.

SC is being compared to games in different genres

All opposing opinions are wrong.

Counter arguments: Well that is the Star Citizen subreddit so they have the right to shut out irrelevant content from other games. The also can have the opinion that SC is the best game. There is nothing wrong with that.

And I agree. There is nothing wrong with having that opinion but this is slowly turning into fanatical love for the game and this will eventually lead the community down a dark path. For a good example look at the early days (and even to this day) of the Battlefield community. If you give the slightest hint that you are interested in CoD you are bashed, chewed, trolled, and attacked until you quit the game. There have been cases of a CoD youtuber doing a BF video and from the moment that video released he got so much hate and trolling that he had to take down the video. I am afraid for the SC community to head down that direction.
I love the passion the SC community has for their game. So much brilliant fan made videos, pictures, renders, news articles, theory crafting, and activities. I really don't want to see the dark side.

As a sub community of /r/StarCitizen I really hope there is something we can do to fix this.

Circle of jerks.

I think that their elitist attitude has led to the downfall of the subreddit more than memes ever would've.

Its for the same reason that that story got down voted or why anything else gets down voted. I don't understand it, but it seems like the only story that gets up voted are ones only about SC, bashing EVE or other space games, or pictures of Chris Robert's morning bowel movements.

If there is anything I can do aside from my single up vote or down vote I can give, let me know.

Oh and a PSA: Hop into that 1st thread and give TestBot aka WhitePawn00 some up votes in the comments. Probing in EVE was fun and not tedious at all. They must've been hitting the keyboard with their faces to fail at probing.

EDIT: Relevant Probing. South Park, so possibly NSFW? I think its SFW, but better safe than sorry.

I've noticed this too...

I'm kind of afraid to post in /r/StarCitizen because I've noticed a very strict downvoting stance...

MANY simple comments/opinions get downvoted a LOT more than any other subreddit.
(the other more "friendly" subreddits I visit are /r/GranTurismo and /r/WarThunder, there's also /r/SWTOR. They get a decent amount of upvotes for even "mediocre" posts and pretty low number of downvotes. When they do, it's really pointless posts, or the same thing being posted 5-10 times already and someone thought they were the first... I don't think it's just the reddit "fake downvote" thing as they don't last more than a few hours even on /r/StarCitizen... it's just very hostile over here...)

Some of the reddit behaviours I'm not liking very much...

The only reason I'm subscribed to that subreddit is because between the elitists and crap, they update with news and other cool stuff. For instance, /u/dace is awesome because he transcribes the WMH episodes for people who don't have time to watch, and even adds timestamps.

I'm not going to lie, I get fanatical when hyping over stuff, but come on, SC has no gameplay yet. How can you compare it to anything other than with what we're told it will be?

exactly... from great expectation comes great disappointment.

I really hope Chris Roberts can pull it off, but as of right now, I'm starting to think there's going to be one of the biggest backlashes in gaming history along with the most entitled crowd of angry mob ever, because they spent so much money on a "piece of crap" (that someone will eventually call it...) and the impatient teenager with bottomless wallet will start throwing pitchforks because they didn't get "what they wanted"

I know this game is ambitious, and I know Chris Roberts has great plans, and I believe he can eventually pull it off, but I don't think everything will happen right away, and with a game as complex and grand as this, there's bound to be glitches, bugs, LOTS of it... which leads to someone pointing them all out, calling out on how this game fell short, or how it doesn't do the 1 of the millions of things it "promised" to do, etc.

I'm a person of low expectations because I like to enjoy what I play (I enjoyed X-Rebirth in its early stages... apparently a lot of the bugs are sorted out now, and it was a bit a nuisance trying to go around the game-braking bugs, but I still enjoyed it none the less) but I'm more fearful of the "fandom" than the ability of CIG

Two words: Freelancer cockpit.

I think the issue comes from the fact that this is a crowdfunded game with open Alpha, etc. It will inevitably breed a sense of entitlement in the community, but at some point Chris Roberts is going to have to stop trying to please everyone and tell them to just deal with it.

You all raised some great points. Here' my opinion:

  • "MANY simple comments/opinions get downvoted a LOT more than any other subreddit."
a lot of useful information and questions get downvoted too. I mean compare this to the Eve subreddit they like hating on. Right now the highest posts there are about helping new people, or are really simple and innocent questions that are massively upvoted so not only the new person gets their answer but gets support. I mean imagine how that player feels as opposed to a player who comes here and asks "so I was confused about this" and gets downvoted into oblivion.

  • "I'm not going to lie, I get fanatical when hyping over stuff"
And that's perfectly fine! I do that too! When I found out about SC I was super excited! I mean I still am. It promises so much and they are a really open dev team. That is brilliant. The problem that I have is when this fanatical interest in the game or developer begins to turn to hate towards other entities to prove that what you like is actually better. That is what is happening to /r/SC and it is dangerous.

  • "but as of right now, I'm starting to think there's going to be one of the biggest backlashes in gaming history along with the most entitled crowd of angry mob ever,"
Have no doubts about it. Here's what I think:

The backer expectations --> ______________

The game final release --> ______________

The average AAA game --> ____________

  • "It will inevitably breed a sense of entitlement in the community"
Sadly it already has. I skimmed the official forum's general section for about five minutes and I saw people asking for resource intensive but minor changes because of personal opinion. Some of the people who have backed this game believe that because they dropped money and backed this project, the now magically know how to design games. This is a minority obviously but is a loud minority and it is leaking.

Yeah... i'm in the right squadron. I couldn't agree more. The best thing the non-vocal majority can do is not take it too seriously and have fun with it, creating a fun atmosphere for newcomers at game release. Stocking up on Aurora's is a good start....

I am expecting a decent game and hoping for a truly great one. Criticism can be a very good way to generate changes for the better, that said it is still way to early to judge anything. I do have to laugh at people expecting some awesome game demo out of the first DFM experience. I expect to play the first iteration 30 minutes lol(I use the term play here lightly).

Testbot, I am not sure Star id bet against Star citizen in terms of being better then the average AAA game. I guess it depends on how you define average AAA game. does that include Diablo 3, Sim City and the BF4 launch :D

Doesn't seem so horrible to me, but then again, I was a frequenter of /r/totalwar when Rome II was released, and /r/warthunder has it's own special breed of entitlement.
Maybe I'm just hanging around in the worst forums.

EDIT: Though I will admit the downvotes make no sense at all to me.

I suppose what is sad is the fact that the moderators almost encourage this behavior. I see this especially on r/motorcycles aka rideit and r/trucks. If you ride a Harley or a Ducati, you're immediately made fun of in a sense even though what you ride shouldn't mean anything as long you do ride. With r/trucks, if you don't have a bigger truck than a half ton, you're "compensating" for something and are laughed at as well. Its a sad part of reddit when you have mods that don't care enough to lay down the law or decide to encourage such attitudes.

I think that is why we have sub-reddits for the larger main reddits because they tend to be trash and the smaller ones are more community-oriented in regards to even the smallest voices being heard and appreciated.

Although to be fair, people are just horrible to each other and their ideas in general, so fuck'em and hang out where you like being. Like here. Its so warm and cozy. Has that laundry-fresh smell to it. There's a beer in a frosty mug with your name on it. Ahhhh, so nice.

It was just the other day when some guy uploaded a video he made. There was so much editing and effort, it must have taken him hours.

His only mistake was that he was not as good as some of the professionals that post there. He got downvoted, I felt so bad for him!

We as a group can make a difference.

Find these downvoted posts and help them get some time near the top of the page. We have the numbers to make a difference.

  • We can practice organized Aurora crashing with our legion of subreddit upvotes.
  • We can start a thread about the issue in the subreddit and use our legion of upvotes to keep the topic and relevant discussion near the top.
  • We can communicate with the moderators and tell them that we disapprove.
  • We can bring it up within Redd Faction and urge them (0r individual groups within RF) to also start/join a tolerance campaign.
IMO, it weakens the Reddit SC community. I don't visit the subreddit much these days, though it's primarily because endless speculation bores me. I'd rather have fun with the community with funny pointlessnesses and stories/humour about space and space games.

I wish the speculation was in a separate subreddit /r/SCspeculation, and let /r/starcitizen be a place where people could just be themselves.

I like this idea.
Second

But we have to coordinate our efforts as to make sure that we keep such an idea afloat. I do feel that we should appeal to the moderators first as I believe that it means that we tried a diplomatic solution rather than just brute forcing our tolerance down their bigoted throats.
