So if you update your windows 7 or 8/8.1 machines you will now see a Windows icon in the bottom right corner.

The Windows icon in the corner will allow you to reserve your copy of Windows 10 when it comes out next month.
Windows 10, for anyone who doesn't know, will be completely free to anyone who owns Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 8.1.

If you have a pirated version you get a free upgrade, not a free license. You'll still need a crack or to buy Windows

The main benefit from upgrading is significant performance boost across the board for your PC. Another good reason is Windows 10 will have a lot more support for gaming and VR.

Personally, I would recommend waiting a few months to upgrade (unless you're on a multi-boot system and dying to try the release version). There's always the odd driver bug or software compatibility issue that crops up and launch periods are prime time for discovering security flaws (if those things heavily concern you). Although compatibility issues are going to be almost non-existent if you're using mainstream HW and SW.

Also, if you would rather buy a separate license the pricing is going to be the same as 8.1 (120 for home, 200 for pro).

Assuming that you actually do want all of the sexy optimizations that DirectX 12 offers, you *HAVE* to upgrade to Win10. Some people think that's kinda boners and it may be, but that doesn't change the fact that you have to do it.


If you're going to make the jump !BACK UP YOUR SHIT! Or at least anything you legit care about losing on your OS drive (you do have a dedicated drive for your OS though right?). I would hate to hear about how you had to download all of your porn and game patches again after the patch gets borked.

Assuming I think it's worth doing on my backup system I'll be making the jump (and def running it when I rebuild my main rig).

I plan on waiting a week or a month after Win10 launch to pick up my free copies for both my laptop and desktop. I also will back up everything on my OS drive (desktop files, downloads, notes, etc) on a secondary drive just in case. This is what I usually do when I either do an OS upgrade or a clean install.

I hate doing clean installs sometimes.

Is it sad that I'm doing the upgrades solely because I got a SSD (finally) and lost my windows CD and key, so I can't reinstall onto my SSD?

There is a tool you can find that will read your licence key off your system, and you can download win7 for free from windows, legally. If you really don't want to upgrade

I'll upgrade to 10 once I'm sure it works... Microsoft pushes their releases out so fast they're usually half done until a service pack is released. I'll let the masses be guinea pigs before I go through the hassle of upgrading. I'm still licking my wounds from Vista, and that was how long ago...

I have been using windows 10 since the start of preview and on a handful of machines, so far its really smooth works well and not a single driver issues yet on any hardware I have thrown at it. The only issues I have had at all was 1: and error code when updating that ended up meaning needed more disk space lol could use a better label! XD 2: at the very beginning avast wouldn't install on it, but that was fixed quickly and it was on avast not windows. Those are honestly the only problems I had, they are trying super hard this time around and it shows, I understand waiting and I agree but I do not think you will be waiting long for your answer.

I'm in like Flynn! I'll probably move my laptop over first, just to use it as the guinea-pig for software and games. After everything is working then the desktop is getting 10 too.

This is the first time I've actually been kinda excited to put a new OS on a PC...very rare occasion!

I have also been the tech preview of Win10, and its been, pretty much issue free. There were a few weeks of AMD driver issues, but they got it fixed. My laptop will run SC without melting into a smoking pile of slag now, too.

This is the right time in the cycle of Windows to upgrade.

XP? Awesome!
Vista? Horrible (at release, SP 1 and 2 helped a lot)
7? Awesome!
8? Ehhhhhhhhhh, it's okay? I guess?
10? From everything I've read from people that have it, it's pretty great. DX12 as well, chaching.

ok, so I'm debating wiping my rig to install Win10 on it, it won't install without changing the partition type to GPD.

How old is your install and is it ssd or hdd? If your install is over a year a clean would give a better smoother install, and same if its an ssd. Make sure your motherboard has ahci (in the sata controller area) enabled to take full advantage of all the newer improvements in windows and your ssd.

What's my motivation to upgrade? Call me old school, but if it ain't broke...? Win7 is working fine for me. I mean unless games start becoming primarily written for DX12. I'll wait for you guinea pigs to run out all the bugs & security vulnerabilities. *ha* ...even if it does cost me a hundred bucks in the long run to basically "opt out of the Grand Bug Hunt" (no such thing as free, kids; you have been warned) ;)

(Disclaimer: I'm mostly talking out of my ass. I'm too lazy to back stuff up & install Win10. Honestly I'll probably just wait until my next system build in 3-4 years to upgrade.)

Yeah, the biggest reason to move to Win10 immediately is for any potential DX12 improvements. I've heard a lot of good things about how it's optimized which allows older hardware to perform better. Other than that one big (and it is big imo) point, I'm still not 100% on board with upgrading within the first month or two.

My plan is to do it on my laptop that I game on sometimes and give it a month, then if it is still as good as preview is I will put it on my desktop. I may speed that up though. And of course since all preview copies get 10 free, all my test gear will be using it.

Furthermore, the people who are trying out the Windows 10 Preview already will be automatically upgraded to Windows 10 release version, no word yet how the licenses are gonna be verified though so people with XPs or Vistas (god forbid someone is still on Vista :/) might want to check it out :P

The current preview build out for testing is of pro :) so I would guess it probably would be pro they give out
