Thorsen's opening comments in yesterday's ISC video did a lot to address the question of what they want Engineering to be.

I've also had huge concerns about it being an un-fun chore. In the PTU patches it's overwhelmed every other aspect of playing the game.

But he made clear that the intent now is for Engineering to "extend the lifetime of the ship, rather than making your life miserable on a ship". A very clear way to express the change in development.

I think Morph’s conclusion here is right. We need to see component failures and fires before all the armor is laid waste. Either way though, any ship large enough for an engineer us gonna want one. They’re super important.

I think he missed an issue he notes early on though. He complains that the complexity of the 3D map in the engineering panel needs to be simplified to 2D, at least on the bigger ships. I totally disagree. That 3D map is harder to read than could be, but it holds more information. What this means is an engineer on a big ship has to develop real skill—the player has to develop serious skill just to read the damage map. This is going to make engineering difficult and rewarding, and engineers are going to specialize on specific ships. You can easily imagine a player becoming very skilled at engineering a type of ship and sticking with it, and eventually skilled engineers for say, the Idris; will be highly sought after and extremely well paid.

Just as it should be!
