I don’t own any big ships and don’t plan to own anything larger than a Polaris, but with the offering of this new battlecruiser I am wondering again how to motivate TESTies to serve aboard these big ships. I wonder whether there’s a way as an org to motivate players to sit a turret, stock supplies, crew the bridge, provide engineering, organize hangars and their tractors, etc. If we had a single system that tracked every member’s experiences by role and time served, ship’s Captains would then be in a better position to organize their crew from the stock of available players, and members could earn esteem through competence and service. I have to wonder whether a single spreadsheet might serve here. Any thoughts? If you could glance at a room in Discord and know what every player there actually knows about crewing a ship, wouldn’t a tool like this make you a better Captain, and all the players better crew members, and wouldn’t it aid in crewing up any given ship in less time and fewer hassles? This seems like it could be a significant advantage CIG could offer its members. I’m just very unsure how it would be accessed and managed.

Personally, I like sitting in turrets as long as we got a clear goal we're going to fulfill and we're actively working on fulfilling that.

I'm definitely one that doesn't own the capital ships, but I am great at warming the seat of a turret and keeping the barrels even warmer blasting away all the bugs that fly around the ship.

I have many capitals and still enjoy being a crewmember on large ships. It is something new to do. It's not like anyone would be able to do this every time they are playing. I see it as a once in a while gameplay loop which offers experiences you will not get solo or on a smaller multicrew ship.

So long as there's a definitive goal in mind I'd sit in turrets, move/restock equipment ect. It's all combined effort towards the same goal and some days I just want to chill and not sweat my nips off trying to be the best of the best lol. Hell I'd let other trusted org members take and crew my Idris and Polaris whilst I crew a completely different ship mopping the dang floor 🤷🏻‍♂️. With how big the org is, after game release people will eventually find their crew/groups of people that they get on with and like. Form their online friendships and will no doubt be down to do whatever their friends are even if it is the more mundane jobs just because it's hanging out with your guys/gals.

I like how many people are humble enough to crew. What I’m wondering though, is if there are some real benefits to tracking our experience. I know I’m more likely to bring on someone who has previously played engineer than one who has not, or sat second seat to calculate quantum jumps. Some positions are guaranteed to grant useful experiences one can draw on.

If you want the chin gun seat on a Polaris, show me you have that kind of experience. That makes you much more marketable and therefore valuable.

None of this is really going to come on, until all the disciplines and mechanics are in the game and working well. I will happily play a support role be that bringing a ship or a starfarer or repairing or engineering or a turrent gunner. But right now there's not much fun in supporting roles as the games such a mess.

I guess we can practice things though!

The Odin and ships like it are Star Citizen's equivalent of Raid content in other MMO's. That idea is not new, but it implies that it's going to fall into the category of uncommon play with regards to what actually happens in the 'verse.

We don't have classes in this game, so tracking of any kind becomes somewhat worthless as 'anyone can fill any role'. Obviously how well any one person can do that is questionable.. But TEST has Divisions for different careers based on player interest, which is probably about as close as we are likely to get for personnel management.

As expressed by fellow TESTIES above, turret play is fine if there is an active shooty mission happening, and actually contributes to successful PvE gameplay in some ships. But for something like the Odin, it's going to be a core group that pulls things together, and necessary jobs will be filled by tossing in whoever is there at that moment. Most of those roles will be boring as hell even to a motivated gamer, so unless there is something actually happening the big ship shine will quickly fade.

An org that can muster a few effective Raid Leader personalities together in the same place and time might be able to make full use of the Odin. For the rest, it's more a 'Pride of Ownership' thing.

I'm against any kind of tracking system, other than a potential payout/merit for showing up and putting in the time on that 'raid'. We AREN'T the military, and even there the documentation is a poor reflection of reality.

Also, Single Malt is the answer.

Yeah, I can’t really speak to it since I don’t play rn, but I think half the issue is the lack of persistence. I’m super excited to be able to bed log and crew on a huge org All-father of war or insert-carrier-here but not until I know the effort won’t be wiped away. I remember massive org pushes on planetside 2 fondly, but temporary stakes don’t do it for me.

OMG PS was soooo goooood. Organising in to three groups of 8 or 10 to form your platoon of 30 did not seem at all tedious as it just worked and took 5 mins, and then all going of and doing something together was sooooo much fun. I'd forgotten those days.

Sheeeesh, there's a throwback. Peak planet side 2 was the shiz. I played on console mostly. That was probably my most played game ever. Had over 6000 hours in it. Played mostly infantry and used vehicles just to complete the challenges. Got every class' shiny armour, the black camo and the weapon challenges. What a lovel/hate grind that was 😂

Can’t say I went that hard, but joining a horde and drinking a few brews while trying to evict some purple spandex wearing fuckers from my ground was a top feeling. I desperately hope they pull SQ42 and SC together and give us gameplay loops ( like player owned territory and stations) that can evoke that and support Friday night ops.

Haha I played mostly VS and NC but that was due to TR being most populated a majority of the time. Yeah if there's territory loss and gains it will help retain the player base for sure. Just grinding out currency and blueprints/items will be old news within a year if there's no reason to utilise and spend/use it in meaningful PVEVP situations.
