After hearing from a fellow testie (I'm looking at you Rock) that if you buy a CCU with store credit and apply it to a giftable ship it becomes ungiftable. From what I could remember I bought a CCU with store credit, applied it on a giftable ship and it remained giftable. So after being told it wast so (still looking at you Rock) I tested it again. and the result was as follows.
Here you see a giftable P72.
I bought a CCU with 15$ in store credits and some of my own money.
After applying the CCU to my P72 the Reliant is still giftable!
So if you want to cash in on your spare store credit by buying cheap ships and selling them after CCU'ing its possible!!
