How would you work a 250 budget?

I invested only slightly more than that: Colonel package, upgraded to Super Hornet, plus another starter package with the 315p. This gives me a premiere dogfighter and a decent exploration ship, as well as two characters. I'm planning on making one of them a dedicated NPC to the other, so I can start with an NPC gunner, but I might decide instead to just hire out for that and run two characters. I think I spent $260, all told, but at Veteran level prices.

IMO, you can't go wrong with either a Freelancer or Hornet game package, and use the extra money to either pick up another ship or to buy an upgrade to the starter ship.

For $25 more, you could get the Constellation game package, which could be a very nice purchase as well.

That's a pretty good haul, and 10 Auroras would make for a nice garage haha. I've already picked up a 325a starter package and was thinking about putting another 250 into it, so I was curious what other people would do with that sort of budget. I'll mainly partake in pvp activities, but maybe some hauling, salvaging, or exploration on the side.

Personally, I was leaning toward a Cutlass, Hornet , and Aurora. Maybe the stealth Hornet, maybe a Freelancer. But then that constellation looks great too. Too many options, lol.

A Starfarer / Banu Merchantman plus your 325a would set you up for some Industry + escort. I don't think you can get one now, but it should be up for grabs again.

There's also all of the new ships that they added to the game over the last $10 million or so in stretch goals. Those are bound to come available at some point, and there's some cool ones in that list.

If you already have a 325i package, I'd go something that isn't a fighter role or swap it for a Hornet package. Cover the fighter and money-maker ship roles then see what you have left for fun. I have a Hornet package and the Freelancer. After seeing the Hornet variants, I have faith the Freelancer ones will be pretty good for merchants.

If I hadn't already gotten LTI on my 325A, I'd definitely be swapping it out. I may just get a couple base models of the Hornet and Freelancer, or Hornet and Cutlass, along with an Aurora, and see what upgrade variants might come along. I've basically been sitting and coming up with every permutation of ship I could afford and which roles I would like to play - too much time to wait haha. I guess I'm less focused on what I would get, and more interested in what other people would do with a budget of 250 dollars.

I'm hoping to be able to hotswap my Super Hornet into a Super Ghost variant within the game. I was sorely tempted by the Banu Merchantman, and I also like the Xi'An Scout. I'm not planning on pledging for a Freelancer or Constellation because those seem like ships I'd like to acquire within the game, but I'd consider an industry ship.

$40 into the game, spend the rest on the PC.
This is actually probably the best way to do it. Considering anything you pledge for will be attainable in-game and you'll have lots of TESTies to help you do so, that extra $210 for a nicer/second graphics card, better CPU, more RAM, or an SSD will make way more difference in the long-run.

Your logic is directly countering my compulsion to spend money to look at fake spaceships in my hangar, haha. I'm planning on a comp upgrade in the mid future as well
Yeah, I know the feeling. That said, the most logical/efficient thing to do would be buy the $40/$45 Aurora package that gets you Alpha and Beta access, then save the other $200+ to spend on a new computer right before official release. I'd hesitate to do a full upgrade now or any time soon, since the rate at which computer components (GPUs especially) evolve is staggering and in 1.5 years even today's high-end cards will be irrelevant. Maybe make sure your computer can run the DF module and a bit extra for any sort of persistent universe alpha/beta testing, but I probably wouldn't go much farther unless there's other games that are already out which you want to play.

I pledged for the 300i package back in November, eventually grabbing a 325A package along the way when they came out. I also went and grabbed an Aurora LN addon to scratch my ship buying itch for the time being, as well as something else to stare at for a while. As far as upgrading goes, my computer can run the Hangar pretty well on Medium, and hopefully stands up through the DM so I can put off the upgrade till closer to launch.

I had a mind to drop some spare fun money in the meantime, so I wanted to see what other people might do with that sort of cash ship-wise. I might just get a Cutlass when it's released for the HM, and wait around to see if something really grabs me or there is another SuperHornet sale. Or a Gladiator sale. Maybe a Retaliator. Or Caterpillar. Or anything with PvP in mind, actually. I really think that SC is a project worth gambling on and I have some spare cash to do it until I do an actual upgrade, you know?

I've got my starter ships for now - I might just wait until the Retaliator comes back around for sale. It's really the only ship that I've pretty much fallen for immediately, and something about playing a support/arty ship really appeals to me.
