The HTC Vive will cost $799

The price for the HTC Vive, the virtual reality headset collaboration between HTC and Valve, leaked this morning in advance of its expected announcement at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The device will be $799.

Preorders for the HTC Vive begin on Feb. 29, with the first shipments arriving in April.

The Oculus Rift will begin shipping units at the end of March, after going on pre-order sale in early January. That unit costs $599.

I'll go prove it since I'm in Spain, but...... No buy. To be honest, it's not a surprise, but I'm not paying that much.

This is in line with pretty much everyone's prediction/expectation, from what I've seen... but I'll definitely be waiting for the VR market to settle a bit before taking the plunge. Hopefully things get cheaper sooner rather than later; if it follows the same path as most new tech, these things'll be half the price next year.

It's gonna hurt when I upgrade though. Current video card ain't gonna cut it for VR. Current power supply ain't gonna cut it for a new top-end video card. :(

I gotta say, as excited as I am, for either system, the price tag is horrendous. That's as much as I've spent on SC! For a real, tangible, usable, real life item. That's...that's horrible. Who spends real money on real things?!?

I'm on board with @Takran. Waiting a bit for the market to settle seems like a wise decision. Unless one is made of money of course. In which case, I'll take one VR set, please and thank you, you beautiful, sexy, glorious beasts.

I'm a huge believer in the entire VR industry, but I'm definitely in the "wait-and-see" camp. I'll be getting a headset for sure, but it'll probably be next year before I make the jump. My biggest influence will definitely be which company pushes the hardest for cross-platform software support and general quality of life options for developers. Everyone is promising it, but I'll want to see who makes the greatest strides in that arena before I make the jump.

I just don't see how SC will work with VR ( too much head movement in game ). As for the price it is what it is.

I mainly want it for SC (and porn). Until there more support and I'm sure what I buy isn't going to have to be replaced in 6 months I'm going to wait and see.

I'll buy one when VR headsets cost 300 dollars or less, are massively supported, and can be run well on mid range cards. Until then, I'll just keep playing as I have for years.

VR already works, it's integrated and lots of people use it. Does it perform excellently? no. Does it work, and will it get much better? yes. Meanwhile, VR works fantastically in ED. The thing about VR is that you aren't following the character's head, you're controlling the character's head. He looks where you look, and you're only limited by what's biologically possible considering the location of the body itself.

Can't say how well it runs on mid range cards, or how great it is compared to the OR/Vive, but the OSVR headset is 300 dollars, and apparently is pretty good.

I'm going to probably sit out the first generation of VR, 800 bucks is a *big* investment for peripherals. The price will probably drop noticeably within 2-3 years after some Chinese ripoffs start edging into the market.
