I dunno. We use laminated composite here in the US.
I once worked with a US Army PhD mechanical engineer on weapons design, which automatically takes you into the labyrinth of armor design. It is shockingly complex. I think though the unique feature here is the ceramic armor is formed of large castings fit to the tank rather than strapped onto it. Looks way cooler, but is much more expensive.
The reason is stealth of course. They wanted smooth surfaces to coat with stealth technology. Thing is most anti-tank missiles like the Javelin are infrared guidance, so stealth coating is superfluous. If they somehow managed to vent and project the heat away from the vehicle, then future anti-tank weapons might use EM or radar, which would make that coating valuable.
