So I recently completed a six-day advanced spins and aerobatics clinic taught by Gennady Elfimov, a former Russian Aerobatics Champ and Yak-52 training specialist.

This is a cut from working on aggravated spin recovery. In an aggravated spin you deliberately enter out-spin aileron (right aileron in a left spin, or vice versa) which greatly speeds up the rate of rotation. Gena's course focuses on aggressive and effective recovery techniques for minimum height loss. The aggravated spin is the middle building block as we move from regular spins to flat spins.

As you hold the aircraft in the aggravated spin, full in-spin rudder, full back stick with full out-spin aileron the spin really wraps up, then Gennady says recover, you enter full opposite rudder then rapidly move the stick to the opposite corner (e.g., full forward and full in-spin aileron). After 2-3 rotations the spin quickly transitions to a vertical rolling dive and you neutralize the controls then recover from the vertical or near vertical dive.

This is hard work, but fun, and it will allow me to finally start to play with vertical maneuvers like humpty bumps, vertical rolls and hammerheads.

Once I had completed the clinic successfully I now have Gennady's blessing to practice everything we trained, accelerated stalls/departures, precision 1 and 2 turn spins (upright and inverted), aggravated and flat upright spins, hammerheads, humpty bumps, ultra slow loops (entry 110 knots), and slow rolls. I have a totally new understanding of where the corners are, how forgiving the Yak is, until it isn't, and just how violent and disorienting it can be when it does bite. Fantastic exploration of the full capabilities of the plane.

Flew 11 hrs in 7 days, averaging +5-6 and -2 to -3 G’s on each flight, I was physically and mentally beat for several days after.

Flat Spin (full power, entry from botched hammerhead, full aft stick with out-spin aileron and full in-spin rudder)
