As I was watching Wing Commander, there were some correlations that stood out. It got me thinking and more to the point, doing research. As many of you know, Chris Roberts directed the Wing Commander movie. He has also had a very long list of video games under his belt. Looking back at the wing commander series, there are quite a few things that have bled over into the Star Citizen universe.
From the movie:
What it does point out though, is that this whole Star Citizen world has been building in Chris Roberts' brain for over 30 years. The names, concepts, and ideas that CR has utilized throughout the decades are showing up in this game. It reminds me of J.R.R. Tolkien actually. He built a huge and amazingly in-depth world that his characters lived in. They are still releasing the content that he dreamt up and jotted down long after his death.
So long story short, this has been an imaginary world that CR has had in his head (more than likely) since he was a kid. It's the sort of genius that you see in the first book of a long series. It's the first few works of art that an artist has been perfecting since childhood. It is the world of imagination that we all lived as a kid but never had the resources to bring to life. At 123 million dollars and counting, he now has those resources and we are now looking at his brain child coming to life.
Basically, I watched Wing Commander and my faith in the game has been renewed. With decades of ideas behind him, Chris Roberts is currently building the world that he has always dreamed about. This means that even if the funding falters, the game is a freight train that will not be stopped. Even if our crowdfunding proves to be insufficient (which is possible if you do the math on 300+ employees), he will find outside funding to make his dreamworld a reality.
This is going to happen. This is going to be amazing.
TLDR: CR is J.R.R. Tolkien. Watch the brain child grow.
From the movie:
- Jump points: the jump points that are in the movie are unstable and are in a state of flux. This is why jump point navigation is a big thing and explorers will be able to make some decent money off the constant updates. This is mirrored by the video HERE
- Bengal carrier: one of the main ships in the movie was a Bengal carrier. The name was familiar even if the design wasn't
- Hornet: When the two "new recruits" showed up to the Bengal, they made note that they didn't see any of the "hornets" they used to fly in training.
- Origin Jumpworks: CR started working at a company called Origin Systems in 1986. This is the company that released games like ultima and, of course, wing commander
- Anvil Aerospace: CR left origin systems and founded Digital Anvil in 1996. Here, he was involved with the creation of the Wing Commander movie in addition to the Starlancer and Freelancer games.
