Or "Windows 10 and it's nasty habit of pissing it's bed at night"
So as an IT tech I simply had to have Windows 10 installed day one because that's just the sort of person I am. And besides some privacy issues and a few bugs here and there with software compatibility the ride has been pretty smooth sailing. Except for one thing... sleep mode. I am a firm supporter of sleep mode and in Windows 7 it was my preferred method of leaving my computer. With the upgrade to Windows 10 my routine was unchanged but every morning I would come in to the computer room to find my computer happily whirring away for gods only know how long. Actually I knew exactly how long thanks to event viewer and the the magic was practically happening minutes after I left the room.
So what exactly was going on you might ask. Well a quick stop at the Command Prompt would quickly tell me... well something. In case you don't know you can use "powercfg lastwake", without the quotes of course, to show what exactly woke the computer up last. It's like asking a child why they were out of bed already though. You will never get a straight answer. "Oh a svchost woke you up huh? Which one?" they kind of shuffle their feet before giving you another slightly awkward answer. "Media Center? But you don't even have one of those." And so the hunt continued.
Thankfully to a little bit of detective work, AKA knowing what the hell I was doing I quickly realized that a task was being ran on schedule. So off to the task scheduler to see what was up and why my non-existent software was waking my bed-wetting child of a computer. Well would you look at that, it appears that the Windows 10 upgrade may have brought over a bit more than we bargained for. Sure as day mcupdate_scheduled was sitting there fully enabled and with a blaring error of "Ayy mate, can't find that whatcha ma callit!" Yes finally the mystery is solved and the reason behind the bed-wetting was found. Turns out Windows 10 decided that Media Center was so good that it was going to try to keep updating it even though it completely forgot it never actually installed it.
So if you find your fancy new operating system has a slight tendency to piddle itself in the middle of the night you might just make sure it hasn't taken it's juice to bed.
tl;dr Windows 10 upgrade found to bring media center update with it that causes computer to wake from sleep.
