It's been bugging me for a while, but what's the arm on the Pioneer for?

Been scratching this itch for a while, but in the recent Jump Point, they showed several alpha designs that had the hull of the Pioneer extend along the arm when it's deployed, allowing it to deploy the module within the hull. However, in the current design, it just seems to extend out to the side for no reason. The module constructed within the hull is out of reach from any crane that might be on the arm to deploy it on the ground, which some have suggested. What the hell is that arm for?

Perhaps that is proof that the Pioneer was meant for TEST Squadron to conquer the Verse through countless settlements. In which case, the arm could be to tap the massive kegs that would be stationed at each TEST station.

Or perhaps that arm is for drawing giant penis designs in the sky overhead whenever the outpost production is completed.

You beat me to it lol. Was gonna say keg deployment and retrieval.

That technically makes the landing pad redundant, doesn't it? It becomes a glorified basketball court if everyone lands next to the arm instead.
Depends what you intend to do on the landing pad. I've not dropped much off at a CryAstro but i've had repairs and refueling. As far as I'm aware you won't be able to load Quantum Fuel unless it is at a Starfarer or Repair a ship unless it is a Crucible outside of a designated pad...

If you have a convoy of 4x Connie Taurus + escorts arrive with goods are you going to have them circle while they come unload one by one on the one active pad, bearing in mind unloading will take time, or just have them drop it close (probably where it would be stored until used anyway bearing in mind you may have a full cargo bay of resources from an earlier drop off - always best to buy in bulk) and use to pad to get the ships refueled and on their way as quickly as possible?

That might be true, though the current size of the pad certainly won't fit a constellation, let alone a Starfarer. I do think your idea that the arm should be able to receive materials from nearby has merit though, since that can easily be solved by using drones, or just use a interface type pad around the arm to allow pilots to land, access the cargo transfer menu, then unload directly into the Pioneer.
The arm should have space to store drones, maybe even industrial sized ones that can carry your completed module to wherever you want within your plot of land. Watching a bunch of Carryalls moving shit around would be awesome, ala Dune.
