Wait, WTF?
If there is a supreme being it makes you wonder if they spilled the bottle of stupid sauce the day they made the people who react to and think they can change bad news by trying to punch it in the face.

People have been questioning the "low numbers" in China/Asia and the rest of the world, there may be a simple explanation for this:
From the beginning, Hong Kong and many other Asian governments have recommended people wear masks in public, whether they are showing virus symptoms or not.

Despite eye-rolling in some parts of the Western press, and talk of Asia's "obsession" with face masks, the tactic appears to have contributed in helping to stem the outbreak.

Taiwan, South Korea and mainland China, all places with widespread mask use, have seen greater success in preventing major outbreaks or reining them in once they begin than in Europe and North America where masks are either not used or hard to come by.

Speaking to CNN, Ivan Hung, an infectious diseases specialist at the Hong Kong University School of Medicine, said that "if you look at the data in Hong Kong, wearing a mask is probably the most important thing in terms of infection control."

"And it not only brings down the cases of coronaviruses, it also brings down the influenza," he said. "In fact, this is now the influenza season, and we hardly see any influenza cases. And that is because the masks actually protected not only against coronaviruses but also against the influenza viruses as well."
Unfortunately, you likely aren't going to get told to wear a face mask, because of the acute shortages...we don't even have enough right now for our medical staff in our hospitals!

Hey my personal freedom is more important than your safety, cause 'Murica.
More on that:

On one hand:
Chinese hospitals overflowing with COVID-19 patients a few weeks ago now have empty beds. Trials of experimental drugs can't find enough eligible patients. And the number of new cases reported each day in China is dropping precipitously.
These are some of the startling observations in a report released on 28 February by a team of 12 Chinese and 13 foreign scientists who toured five cities in China to study the state of the COVID-19 epidemic and the effectiveness of the country's response. Even some on the team, organized jointly by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Chinese government, say they were surprised. “I thought there was no way those numbers could be real,” says epidemiologist Tim Eckmanns of the Robert Koch Institute in Berlin.
But the report is unequivocal. “China's bold approach to contain the rapid spread of this new respiratory pathogen has changed the course of a rapidly escalating and deadly epidemic,” it says. To Bruce Aylward, a Canadian WHO epidemiologist who led the mission and briefed journalists in Beijing and Geneva last week, the effort was a huge success. “Hundreds of thousands of people in China did not get COVID-19 because of this aggressive response,” he says.
On the other hand:
The report highlights how China achieved what many public health experts thought was impossible: containing the spread of a widely circulating respiratory virus. “China has rolled out perhaps the most ambitious, agile, and aggressive disease containment effort in history,” the report notes. The most dramatic—and controversial—measure was the lockdown of Wuhan and nearby cities in Hubei province, putting at least 50 million people under a mandatory quarantine since 23 January. That has “effectively prevented further exportation of infected individuals to the rest of the country,” the report concludes. Most of China did not face such severe measures: People were asked, but not required, to quarantine themselves if they felt ill, and neighborhood leaders monitored their movements.
Chinese authorities also built two dedicated hospitals in Wuhan in about 1 week, sent health care workers from all over China to Hubei, and launched an unprecedented effort to trace contacts of confirmed cases. In Wuhan alone, more than 1800 teams traced tens of thousands of contacts. Aggressive “social distancing” measures implemented in the entire country included canceling sporting events and shuttering theaters, schools, and businesses. Anyone who went outdoors had to wear a mask.
Two widely used mobile phone apps, AliPay and WeChat—which in recent years have replaced cash in China—have helped enforce the restrictions, because they allow the government to keep track of people's movements and even stop people with confirmed infections from traveling. “Every person has sort of a traffic light system,” says mission member Gabriel Leung, dean of the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine at the University of Hong Kong. Color codes on mobile phone screens—in which green, yellow, or red designate a person's health status—let guards at train stations and other checkpoints know who to let through.

UK figures reported today 2nd April:

Total confirmed 33,718
Total died 2,921

Remember, the above is hospital cases in the UK only, so if you assume it's only the most severe cases that are bought to hosspital being reported you are probably not far wrong. The actual number of cases in the greater community? Your guess is as good as mine.

I can't really comment as I'm not expert but with a 5 to 14 day incubation period I assume a bunch of new cases were contracted when TP sold out everywhere and everyone had to start roaming around hunting for bumwad. It's an assumption but perhaps a sad consequence of panic buying (Note: I'm not accusing the victims of being panic buyers themselves).

If you wanted to make your own mask. Will this material work?

HEPA filters remove particles 0.3 microns in diameter. The SARS-CoV-2 particular diameter is measured in nanometers, which are 1000 times smaller than a micrometer. So no you would not be protected.

Thank goodness for that. No bread, no milk, even no toilet paper on the shelves, fine. But start messing with my Henery Hoover bags and now you're getting personal.

I had been utilizing a jockstrap filled with lightly used cat litter, I did my own research and I was pretty confident in my findings. My girlfriend made me burn it though and got me an actual mask from her job (unfortunately she had to go back to work).

There may still be value in making and wearing masks. Yes, the actual SARS-CoV-2 virus particle thingee is nanometers in diameter, BUT, it is most likely transmitted through droplets of snot, spit, whatever, and those are going to be larger and potentially filtered out by cloth or whatever.

If it truly is aerosolized, then we are pretty much all fucked...
