Those flying things are giant flying fish. They are extinct now...
a barrage balloon... the AA of its day.
Those balloons are sent up with long wire cables, they deter any strafing aircraft from attacking as any strafing would require you to dodge a web of metal cables that could rip off your wings.
Lest we forget.
