Ok, did something stupid and now I have more ships than I really need/want and I am looking to consolidate and maybe diversify a bit

Current Ships
Fighters:
315 (LTI)
325
Super Hornet (3 yr)
Sabre (3 mo)
Bucc (LTI)

Dragonfly (3, all LTI)
Terrapin (LTI)
Prospector (LTI)
Larger:
Freelancer DUR (LTI)
Taurus (6 mo?)
Aquila (LTI)
Phoenix (3yr)
Carrack (LTI)

I don't NEED 4 fighters. In fact, two is all I really need and I can get by with just one.

My thoughts...
When the anniversary sale comes up later this year, consolidate a few of the packages

  • Melt the sabre, upgrade a dragonfly to sabre for LTI
  • Melt the 325, upgrade Bucc to a retaliator. Not sure. Was thinking of adding a cargo or med bay to the tali and using it as a blockade runner with cargo bay almost the same size as the aquilla, but with more turrets (that good or bad?) Tali is a bomber, but can be customized more with either a cargo bay, med bay, etc in place of the bomb bay. That said, the Tali needs crew to be safe as there are no pilot operated guns on the Tali....
    • maybe an andromeda instead for pilot operated guns and only 3-6 (pilot, turrets, +engineer, +repair, +snub) crew instead of 6-8 (Pilot, turrets +engineer +repair)?
  • Phoenix will be my small cargo smuggler. Plan on stripping the interior if possible to get back cargo space, then using it as an upgraded andromeda. If not possible, just run smaller, more...discrete..cargos or celebs.
    • With the Phoenix, is there even a need for the Retaliator or the andromeda other than it looks so darn cool?)
    • Might melt ANOTHER dragonfly and exchange/upgrade to LTI if possible...but I do like the hanger
  • Wondering if I need both the 315 AND the terrapin, Terrapin is designed to get hit, 315 is designed to run away from a fight (get in, get out fast)
  • Taurus will be my cargo hauler.
These changes would give me a
1-2 dragonflies (LTI) (for getting around planets when exploring in the DUR)
315 (LTI) and/or Terrapin (LTI) (small jump point explorer/resource explorer or small group command ship)
Super hornet (3 yr) (fun tanky fighter)
Sabre (LTI) (fun run and gun fighter)
Prospector (LTI) (mining)
Lancer DUR (LTI) (jack of all trade ship, used for solo/duo work/exploration)
Taurus (6 mo) (Cargo hauler - solo/duo ship)
Aquila (LTI) (bigger group explore ship)
Phoenix (3 yr) (smuggler/gunship - maybe LTI upgrade, but don't know yet)
Retaliator (bomber or base) (LTI)? Maybe an andromeda instead?
Carrack (LTI) (large group explorer, large fleet command ship)

Other ideas? Thoughts?

Dragonflies are always nice, I'd say keep the 1-2
315 and Terrapin are similar ships, but one's a solo and other has multi possible.
The Aquila seems to be a Carrack for those who don't want to fill out the full crew. If you plan on grouping with lots of people/NPCs I'd say go with Carrack, otherwise Aquila might do.
I don't really think a 315, Terrapin, DURp, Aquila, AND Carrack are all necessary. I'd pick the few you think you'd want to crew and keep those.
Taurus can haul some cargo, true, but the Carrack has a bigger cargo hold. For that matter, a Starfarer seems to be a better cargo hauler as you can refuel yourself mid-flight.
Phoenix is just nifty, I've thought of getting one.
Retaliator might come in useful, I wouldn't get an Andromeda if you already own a Taurus, Aquila, and Phoenix. Unless you just really love the Connie.
I don't really know or care much about fighters ;)

I've had a bit of the same problems in the past. Seems like I had too many ships and needed to cut down. I'm still waiting for them to put the Endeavor up on sale again so I can get that. Then I think my fleet will be complete. Although they have hinted at a truly dedicated stealth ship, which the Ghost and Sabre are not.

you only need 1 dragonfly unless you somehow can fly 3 at once or are planning on buying a caterpillar.
terrapin means you don't need the DUR as it performs the same function of exploration only is better at it...
prospector is good to keep
decide on what god dam coni you want lol. and if its the aquila then decide between that or the carrack. you don't need both in that case since one is just a bigger better version of the other.
and for god's sake man pick a combat ship!!! Buck is 3rd in durability but matching the top 3 most durable ships in weapons. hornet is second and saber is first according to the devs in how they want to balance them.

if it was me:
upgrade dragonfly to saber or super hornet for the LTI (unless you plan to keep the buck)
Keep either the aquila or the carrack (aquila does the same thing the other connie's do and more)
Keep Prospector
Keep Terrapin
Keep 1 Dragonfly

get rid of the rest and upgrade a dragonfly to a ship that fills a role I don't already have a ship for.

Dragonfly fulfills the role of getting around space or ground quickly. terrapin and either aquila or carrack fill the roles of exploration giving me a solo ship to explore with and a multi-crew ship that can provide ground and air vehicles.Prospector provides steady income from mining. then the 1 combat ship to pvp and pve in. After that unless there is some other facet of the game you want to focus on then you really don't need any more ships.

Can you activate a game package, then gift your SELF a ship from another active account? This may apply to you, but I'm asking for myself also. I have my main, first account with something like 22 ships in it, but I'd like to spread them around a little! Montoya was taking about this during his stream today, how he kind of envied the folks starting out with just an Aurora. I feel that way too, but I'd like to give my new account just a little edge.

Yes, you can gift to yourself as much as you'd like, as long as the ship/package isn't bought with credits.

You have a lot of overlap, i.e. carrack and Aquila, dur and terrapin. I also question your choice of the Taurus for cargo but I can see that really cargo hauling seems to be if I must for you. They have recently gone mad with LTI tokens so I would firstly make sure LTI was on any of my combat ships (3 years might be enough but who knows how long you will play). I know we will have upgrades which wont be covered but at least you will be flying.

The only reason for duplication of role seems to be delays in getting a ship back from LTI and or wanting ships in different places but unless there is teleport you still have to travel so how much use can this be. So the most pressing need for an overlap would seem to be combat ships because using them in combat your more likely to loose them. I get people want variety and that is more interesting but that's luxury not need.

Other than that I would start from what ships do I want for each role, try and pick 1, to get a core list. Everything else is just gravy.
Anyways that is what I have done and I still have an overlap in exploring with Terrapin and Carrack.

My thoughts for the explorers were this. Sometimes you will have crew (real), sometimes you will want to hire out, other times you will want to solo/duo.
I wanted a full range of explorer ships so I could run the gauntlet of opportunities. Want to go hunt for a new asteroid field to mine, the dur or aquilla. Want to run a full crew, Aquila. Want to run a full our explore multi ship party (4-5 ships including Aquilas, DURs, etc)? Carrack (it finds things that others will go look at etc) Want to map that small jump point? DUR or 315 (actually, map everything in the 315/terrapin if you are not that great of a pilot?) What's better...losing a 315 and a single pilot in a blind jump to a new system, or losing a carrack and 5-8 people?

Ship roles I see and where I see my ships fitting in
SAR - Terrapin? DUR?
Small explore - 315, DUR, Terrapin (1-2 people)
Medium Explore (2-4 people) - Aquila, DUR (Aquila gives options to run around surface AND bring stuff back, Smaller DUR cargo area can only bring stuff back unless filled with a dragonfly.)
Large explore (5-6 people) - Aquila, Carrack
Jump explorer - 315, Terrapin, DUR - see above, why risk a bigger ship?
Small Trader - Freelancer variants
Bounty Hunter - Super Hornet
Space Combat/escort - Sabre, Super Hornet
Cargo/trading - Taurus
Smuggling - Phoenix
Luxury tours/celeb taxi - Phoenix
Taxi - DUR
Medical - Carrack
Fleet action - Carrack, Sabre
Mining - prospector
fuel miner - none
Light Bomber - none
Strategic/anti capitol ship Bomber - none
Racing - None
Repair - none
Science - none
Blockade runner - Phoenix?
Long range escort - Phoenix, Aquila, DUR

That said, I agree with the fighters...problem is, the 325 is my game package, so no LTI upgrade there....
Sabre will be upgraded to LTI. Bucc will be gone. Was always meant to be an LTI token anyway. Dragonfly - LTI tokens for the most part. They will be cheap to replace in game. MAYBE the Aquila to a Retaliator?
Don't really like racing atm, so probably no M50

I have two game packages....does that mean playing two toons at once (like 2 accounts?) I don't think this is the case, but if it is, Taurus will be a hauler for the Prospector. If not...melt the Taurus and upgrade Bucc to Starfarer? (fuel hauler/miner) What about crewing the big ships? Need a lot of crew to make money in those (4-6 I am thinking)

When I played EVE, I was mostly solo. I played high sec, built up a mining empire of ships...transports, miners, etc. Used that to fund my battlecruiser. Not sure how Star Citizen will go. Will it be mostly solo work, mostly grouping? How does new crew get to you if you are on a long duration flight and someone has to bail? With people you know, you can probably get together for 2-3 hours 2-3x a week and keep a group of 10-20 going. Hop on and try to find a crew? A LOT harder. Everyone is doing their own thing, everyone has different times they have to leave, etc. A lot that will determine which ships I play is still up in the air. Also, Roberts has said that the bigger ships will cost significantly less proportionally now, then they will be in game....get the Tali and the Starfarer and ditch the Taurus, Aquila, and Bucc? Maybe the Terrapin while I am at it?

BAH, back to scratching the head and waiting for the anniversary sale to "upgrade"

IMHO, we are all better off with as few ships as we feel allow us to play how we want to play, since to fly any ship really well will require extreme familiarity. Real pilots seldom are proficient with more than a single aircraft at a time, and that will be true of us as well. So for example if you can get the Sabre to do everything you need just by swapping out the guns, then why have another fighter? If it is not stealthy enough for you and the Ghost is, then I would invest in the whole Hornet system. Perhaps the F7A is the right frame to build on. You can rebuild that in seconds with no expense to any of a dozen different fighters, so why would you need more than one frame?

My thoughts...

Was thinking of adding a cargo or med bay to the tali and using it as a blockade runner with cargo bay almost the same size as the aquilla, but with more turrets (that good or bad?) The Tali is not going to be a fast ship. In popular fiction "blockade runners" are fast. It remains to be seen whether speed can do the kinds of things people are talking about with a blockade runner. What exactly did you mean?

If you set speed aside, the Tali is certainly the more capable ship as compared to the Connies. It can probably take twice the beating and has far better guns, but it also requires more PC's or NPC's. The other main difference is certainly that the Connies are more social ships. There is a bridge rather than a cockpit and when you're on one you can hang with your friends. There is more RP possible on the Connies. If you like RP I would keep at least one. I can't see reason for more than one.

Ok so you want to be able to perform multiple roles and have an array of ships to choose from to perform them. That is nice and all but 1 ship to perform each role is all you need.
SAR - Terrapin
Small Explorer - Terrapin
Medium Explorer - Aquila
Large explorer - Aquila (with the snub and rover this ship actually allows for 5-7 players to each have a job on the ship. you only need 3-4 to run it yes but you can have more in there)
Jump Explorer - Terrapin
Small Trader - Hull B, Aquila (if you remove the rover it can hold just as much as any other connie and more than any freelancer)
Bounty Hunter - What ever 1 combat ship you choose
Space Combat/escort - Whatever 1 combat ship you choose
Cargo/Trading - Aquila
Smuggling - Aquila, Terrapin
Luxury Touring celeb taxi - Not needed since it is a game and unless you are gona roleplay is pointless to do. But if you intend to roleplay I guess Phoenix
Medical - only real ship you got that can do any medical is Carrack
Fleet action - Aquila, combat ship
Mining - Prospector
Blockade Runner - Terrapin, combat ship
Long Range Escort - Aquila, Terrapin

All the same roles fulfilled by a lot fewer ships. Just something to keep in mind and def just my 2 cents.

Sorry (with a capital 'S') in advance @Thalstan, I'm highjacking your thread, rather than making a new one.

Alright @Adiran, here's my thoughts. I want to get the maximun utility out of the least amount of ships in game. I initially wanted to only have about 4 ships, I now have 7, plus Dragonflies.

Here's what I want: I want to be a privateer, an explorer, a salvager, a smuggler, and a combat pilot. I would also like to have a solo-able multi-role ship within that mix.

I have the Mega Explorers Pack:
Terrapin - keeping. Small exploration covered
Freelancer DUR - maybe keep, maybe upgrade to the dedicated salvage ship when shes released. Situation will dictate. She COULD be my multirole and smuggling ship. But I really love the Cutty, and the Cutty fits into the privateering puzzle better.
Aquila - Redundant, having a Carrack and a Terrapin. Thinking upgrade to Harbinger, then buy BUKs to cover the other combat roles.
Carrack - Large Explorer. My dream ship (I think). I really want a reason to keep her, but I have CCU's to all the other $350 ships just in case a better way presents itself. She could even become a Polaris if I keep the Aquila.
315p - Upgraded to Gladius for the time being to play with combat. This ship will get upgraded, probably to another fighter.
Dragonfly - Upgraded to Avenger for the time being to play with combat. This ship will get upgraded to a Cutty, to fit into the privateering role/multiuse, smuggling.

I also have the Caterpiller Combo:
Caterpiller - keeping for privateering and salvage. I am expecting salvage modules to be available.
2 x Dragonflies. - Keeping for spacebikes and planetary speeder bike races.

What are your thoughts? I know I have bases covered, but what I'm looking to do is reduce the number of ships while keeping the utility of my fleet up. Essentially I'd like to have a good balance of soloable ships that I can use when I'm not available to play for long periods with other TESTies.
Don't get me started on the fighter question. Which one or two to end up with. That is burning a damn hole in my brain, haha.
