As you probably know, the M variant is the only one that can be freely transferred to another account. They have been selling for around $3.000-$3.500, and they are extremely rare.
A cheaper option is to buy the P variant ($1.200-$1.500), but they are account locked, so you need to buy the whole account, with all the inherent risks that such a transaction involves.

I would hold off on that.
There is going to be sale next week which will probably satisfy your need for a large ship.
Dont go grey market for ships, they are way overpriced and CIG does not get any benefit from you buying them that way.

The best way to get an Idris is through the $2500 Armada Pack that CIG sells every so often. Possibly within the next two months. They come with a nice discount, too.

Not my intention to start a debate about the morals of Gray Market nor to derail this thread, but in some cases is quite the opposite.
@Marcel: I totally forgot about the Polaris, which may goton sale during the CitizenCon. Unles you plan to invest a lot of UECs on NPCs salaries or have a well populated gaming group, maybe the Polaris is a better option.
Its not a debate about morals, its paying a stupid premium for something you can get in the game with a bit of time.
As Mammon mentioned, there are also sales where the Idris comes up, and its cheaper than $3000.
Ive done plenty of grey market myself, but when it comes to big ships like the Idris its not worth it.

I agree with you on this point. Too much risk for both parties when big monies are involved.
well i want a ship hangar, and sorry, if i caused a debate. i have now as i said, about 2100 usd on my account... so if the polaris wont come with a ship hangar, i think then ill buy the armada pack. there are very nice ships in it :) i love them nearly all :)

and yes i like the idris, but because of the polaris, i dont think it will come back in an armada package :(

Well, I think I could actually bring myself to spend that much. If I imagine how much I've spend on Consoles+Games etc. over the last 10 years...
I just kinda feel like doing so would take away some of the goals I have ingame, or rather the joy of reaching them.
As far as grey market is concerned, I've bought my Game Package (MR)+BMM (LTI from Dragonfly) there (eBay), both under price because I normally have to pay 19% VAT and I bought the BMM from someone in the UK when the Pound went down. Also, the seller of the BMM was selling it for the normal price because he wanted to raise his pledge level.
However, if there's a chance to get what I want from RSI, I'd always spend the money there... I'm just one of those stubborn LTI fans. :P
