Using Quantum Drive Offensively

(I've posted this on RSI too but not sure if I'll get much response over there)

Has anyone else tried this?

I was visiting Kareah Security Station as you always get mistaken for a villain there even if you are innocent and I was spoiling for a fight. The herald is duff at this in 2.6 and explodes easily but it has the highest top speed at 1020m/s which is what I like.

So there is a Vangard and a Mustang working together and I take more knocks than I give out, my hull turns red so I bravely run away.

They both stay at the station and with my speed i'm 20k away in about 20 seconds... I don't feel like waiting 20 seconds to have another go at them and they would see me coming in again anyway... "whats faster than a Herald? Quantum!" I think to myself and hit B - there it is the circle around the station in green, F and drive engaged. I'm back within 3000m of them in moments. Open fire, duke for a few more rounds then back up to 1020m/s and i'm 20k away again, QD back in...

I repeat this three more times before they finally plug me.

I know Zoom and Boom is a recognised tactic but was wondering if anyone had actually used QD to close the gap between themselves and an enemy guarding a location like this before?

Basically I want to know if i've come up with a new tactic for use in the PU :)

I have been informed this is a know tactic but no one bothers because of shield refresh rates.
Might still be useful in multi ships engagements. Smaller fighters/non-orthodox fighters (like the Herald) might have use of it, to jump out and refresh shields or restock missiles or something.

Yeah, its the jumping back into the fray before they know what's going on which i think will be the key point if they think you are retreating and have won and then bwam you're on their doorstep... I wonder if short - range quantum hops will be tolerate in the final game or if it will cause maintenance issues.

Or the Zoom & boom (as in I go boom if I tried it).

In SWC we used to plan tactics around "micro-jumping", which was to plan a standard warp jump and exit the jump inside the same system you were leaving from, which meant in a matter of just a few seconds. That would cause you to leap across an entire system that might normally take half an hour. At Alon Nova Guard we used to plan how to micro-jump into an engagement from outside enemy scan range, hit them very hard all at once. Sounds like you were trying the same sort of strategy

I asked about this some months ago, but people were not clear about how they use the quantum system. How you set coordinates, etc. Back then you could only select specific waypoints rather than enter specific coordinates in space. I don't know what it is like now since I can't yet fly. (We never actually used the micro-jumping for engagements at SWC because the game never got to that point.) Certainly if you plan to tag and bag fighters with the Reclaimer, you will need to know how to jump into very specific coordinates as identified by whomever is tagging.

Yes I use that all the time if I am attacked when I don't want to I just AB as much I can some time just QJ very short then back to the comaray or kareah they where guarding... work like a charm, they get like WTF every time LOL :P
One thing I do some time is to QJ very very short to get away, then turn 180 and QJ just past them manualy, wich mean I sudenly end up behind them when they chase me very effective to but very tricky to get it right.. I tend to jump little to far every now and then LOL...
But when it works it is awesome they don't have a clue where the missiles came from LOL

Thanks for your experience, I have used Quantum Drive without a destination before but could never find the button to abort, it just ran its full course... how do you shut down the Quantum after starting to make a shorter jump? I am very interested in learning how to pull this kind of stunt off :slight_smile:

I am very interested in learning how to pull this kind of stunt off :slight_smile:
You use the same key you asigned to start the jump, I ususly push it repetedly not to fast and there is about a 0.5-1sec sometime 2sec delay before it stop the jump so for very short jumps I just let the jump almost start fully then abort it again that make aythink from 3-5K jump if you miss it'll easy be a 10-15K jump.

Only way to learn to stop it about where you entende and not to stop it to soon or to late is to practice it of cause, you can look at the environment if you like have a planet/satelite/station in perifial view and you know you need to do the jump to stop before passing the planet/satelite/station. Then you see when the jump start that it squish togheter and you start aproachin/passing it, so if you need to stop before it, start klicking the asigned key you have to start the jump until it stops.. it take some practice as i said but once you get the hang of it it is a very useful tool.

Edit: Another trick I do that you can do too is if somone is following you thrugh jump point and keep atacking you, to either when ariving at destination as fast as you posible can go full reverse with AB untill they jump in where they will end up infront of you. Or you can abort a set destination jump by klicking the key assigned to start the jump and you end up halfway there and the one chasing end up at destination point not aware that you stoped the jump, wich leave you time to jump somwhere ellse or jump in after them wich again will make you end up behind them.. ;)
QJ is very effective when used right and to your advantage and not just to jump from A-B there is a lot more use for it ;)

Another time it's usefull to do blind jump when you are almost out of Qfuel and it is not enough to jump to a repairstation to refill it but if you mark crusader planet and find it's enough to jump there, but let say Olisar is on wrong side. Then jump just to the righ or left of crusader wich ever take you closest to Olisar when you past Crusader planet. By timing a blind jump just past crusared planet you can now turn and jump the short jump and land on Olisar respawn your ship or a new one and you good to go again. I use blind jump a lot to save Qfuel specialy when flying a ship like the M50 that have a very small Qfuel tank.

Hope this give you some Ideas where you could benefit from using a blind jump to shorten a trip to save fuel or just to allure a opponent you don't want to engage with ;)

I'm still not clear on something. Can you Q jump t arbitrarily assigned coordinates within a system, or do you have to select some sort of nav point that shows up on the HUD? So for example, say you are neutralizing (EMP, distortion cannon or spike missile) Vanduul fighters in mostly empty space out in Virgil, Tiber or Orion, where there would be very few nav points on your HUD. Can you share the precise coordinates with a friend flying a Reclaimer, and have him jump in right alongside a downed and drifting Glaive, and tractor it in while its computer and propulsion are still down?

Not yet, still in alpha but it would give the Terapin a purpose over the Hornet tracker if it could perform this.

Yes you can jump where ever you want blind as I call it without any destination point, but that is something you learn with experience where you can jump or not. I have been flying in crusader universe long enough to recognize my environtment so I know where a jump will take me and how long I need to jump to get there. Just activate QJ and you can point the nose where ever you like not to a destination and jump and to stop it push jump key repetedly untill it stops.

I don't know if any of the explorer ship will have the ability to log and map jumps you make so you can redo them or share them, it said that the for example the Carrack is going to have this ability to make maps and also map out and find wormhole jumps..

The way I do it for example to get to HEX but I am not criminal I can not get a jump point to it, so I blind jump and I get there in 1 minute for I know where to jump. I do a blind jump a bit to the right and litle down of yela jump point wich you can see when you bring up QJ destination from sunny side of Olisar this jump have to be stoped after 3 sec and don't start counting until jump started this is important. Then you activate QJ destination again turn around about 180 and you see yela then jump to it.
If you done everything right you end up just outside the astroid field behind yela and you cen see part of crusader planet on the left of yela.
Now HEX should be somewher infront of you less than a minute flight away, if you get it realy right you have less than 15-20 sec flight and you're there.

And just a simple thing as taking a shortcut using QJ and do a blind jump save Quantum fuel and you are out of normal jump routes and ariving at location, you will come in from a different angle than you normaly do. A clear advatage if ther would be lurkers waiting to attack you.

Example: Lets say I was doing ICC mission one and died respawned at Olisar got in to ship, now normaly you jump to ICC again and then to your first mission again to finish it. This is not how would do it, I would just do a blind jump from Olisar just past Crusader planet sunny side. Then turn toward the ICC mission one and jump directly from there to it, a lot shorter rute save alot of fuel and now to finish the mission. The advatage I will come in from a different angle to the probe than if you jump from ICC station wich I explaind can be useful if there are users who want to attack you.

I can tell you alot more but best way to get the hang of it is to try it do a 1 sec jump 2 sec jump etc... start counting after jump start not when you are pushing the jump key.. then practice, practice, practice. ;)

That was a great explanation, but I want to be clear--there is still no way for the pilot to enter the coordinates of the location you want to jump to, so you cannot do what I described above? Your friend can give you the coordinates where he is, but you cannot simply enter them into your guidance system and jump?

At SWC there was talk of someone putting together a personal jump calculator, which would do the precise calculations for you, so that if you wanted to go to a specific set of coordinates in deep space, it would give you the exact heading, and time that you should be in flight, so you could exit at exactly the right time.

It should go without saying, what a useful and powerful advantage this would be for all TEST members were we able to come up with one. It does not take a lot of advanced math and computing skills. In fact, it might be worth TEST paying to have such an app designed for our exclusive use.
