Aren't railgun slugs just.....hunks of magnetic material? That's kind of the whole point of a railgun, it just shoots something fast as fuck.

I'd hazard a guess that the ammo for a railgun would be cheap, but the gun itself would be expensive to acquire and need some pricey maintenance (new barrels every X shots or whatever)
Theoretically you're right, but you'd need some super high density material to prevent it from shattering on impact.

More importantly, I think from a balance point of view, CIG wouldn't want inexpensive super-long-range weapons since people would just try to turtle with those and defeat the risk vs. reward thing.

More importantly, the material needs to be effected by magnetic fields. Super dense material won't do if it doesn't launch. Otherwise you could just fire me at something and I'd destroy it thanks to my dense skull.

For those debating railgun function: The projectile is usually seated in a conductive armature. The armature conducting current from one rail to the other results in a linear force on the armature and projectile via the Lorentz force.
So, the projectile doesn't even need to be conductive and nothing in there needs to be magnetic.

You can't use an armature! That's cheating!

Come to think of it, I read somewhere that some torpedos may cost as much as a shiny new Aurora. That brings a question, should you rely on those torpedos guiding system over the intellect of a TESTie armed with humble Aurora?

So this is the power of the Aurora, eh? Not bad.....not bad at all....

I have a retaliator, I'm more than happy to ram it into a captial ship after getting so drunk i forgot to pull the trigger... torpedros deliverered capn!

Am I in the right place?
At that range, you can't miss
And yes you are. Welcome to land of Shit Posts.
What about a Aurora loaded with explosives shot out of a giant railgun?
This I would buy at any (reasonable) cost just for the shear fun.
