So I've been thinking about how mining will work in SC. Currently, we have the Orion, the giant asteroid munching machine and the small ship Prospector.

Do you guys think that there's a point in getting a Prospector if you already have an Orion? Will it be able to do things that its larger brother won't? What are your thoughts?

You could probably turn a good profit paying an NPC crew to solo min with your Orion. You'd probably be more efficient with a player crew to some extent for certain important tasks to speed up the mining or get better ore.

Unless you have the money and the staff to run a fully fledged Orion, get the prospector. Besides, its not as expensive to replace when pirates come to take yo shit.

Prospector can mine on the planet/moon surface. Orion cannot.
I wonder if people would want to steal ore or metal ingots, it wouldn't be as valuable as manufactured goods unless it was some kind of rare or precious metal, so pirates would probably want to go after cargo haulers. Then again, all the pirates would want to go after haulers so they'd be more likely to have an escort and such, so miners could be easier targets for pirates that aren't as skilled.

With industrial ships, you cant go wrong with the Reclaimer. Why mine rock when you can mine lost souls? You can even name it something pun-y like "Hookie-Monster" or "Eat Ship And Die"

(Truth be told; This whole post was so that I could say "Eat ship and Die" That is all, Thank you.)

For sure but they will have different skilled NPC. I hope that the high skilled will be able to perform just as good or similar to humans.

I think for miners, pirates will be the biggest threat; NPC or not. That's what will dictate how much they make
