What's the state of fighters?

So I'm mulling over the idea of a fighter. But damn, there are so many! Some are long range, most are not. Some are glass cannons, others are tough. Some are nimbly nimbly, some are walruses.

So what's the state of fighters right now? Do the cheaper ships stand a chance against things like the Sabre and SH? Are they at all relevant? What ships have long range? (Keep in mind I've been gone a while).

Talk to me about fighters. Does the cutty serve as a decent fighter? Do I even need to get one?

The Sabre and Super Hornet are still favorites, but after the flight model changes coming there will be a lot more to consider when it comes to choosing the right fighter for you.
Yeah, and the fuel mechanics have changed/are changing as well eh?
Think I'll just stick with my Cutty and wait out for the flight model changes. When are they rolling out? I want to start playing now, but I'm apprehensive to jump in and relearn to fly, just to have to relearn to fly again in a few months.

Maybe I'll just grab a few CCUs and call it good.

Fighters are in a good place, maybe not as good as sorcerers or some other magic users, however, if you add the usage of Matt Mercer's Gunslinger to the subclass roster.....
oh, you were talking about in Star Citizen.... we will really have to see what the flight model makes of things come 3.5 (https://robertsspaceindustries.com/roadmap/board/1-Star-Citizen) but I would put money on the Super Hornet and Sabre still being top dogs for most people.

Hello there my friend!

For what I have seen being fresh meat here, I would have to say it has to do A LOT with the use you will give to said fighter. And the platform that you have for it. Arrow seems to be a very good one but as an example, Gladius is faster and has better missile hardpoints. Sabre is bigger and packs a bigger punch of course, not as good shields but super maneuverable and nimble. Hornet series seems to be the King of the hill. But I have chatted to some veeeeeeeery good dog-fighters out there that have been wrecking havoc without meta equipment. Instead going for Sabre's and even some Origin fighters.

That and the new flying/fighting mechanics are big when it comes to considering a fighter.

Hope it helps!

I bought the Arrow. Has a decent payload for the price but you will have to wait for the new flight model. Currently it's bugged regarding the accelaration. Inspite of that I could handle some waves of Pirates in AC quite well (until the accelaration bug caused me to slow down enough to get caught one time to many by a cutlass - also I'm a horrible pilot).
You also get a cheap LTI Token to ugrade later if you are dissatisfied.

Smart ass, haha. Thanks for the link Sum. I guess I'll have to start getting myself read into the state of the game now that this course is coming to a close. I can't wait to actually play the damn game.
Welcome back, Owl! Word is, current patch is kickin'! Go fly.

Someone even said recently the Vanguards are fast, but he didn't explain what he meant.
Thanks Reaper. Good to be back. Well, almost back haha. I drive home Monday night or Tuesday morning.
Vanguard. My God I want my Harbinger/Sentinel again, but I just can't justify the cost at this point. I feel like I'll just end up working towards one in game.

Thanks man. That is helpful. I'll have to get into AC and gone my piloting skills.

Yeah, I have an arrow sitting in my hanger at the moment to. Not sure if it'll stay an Arrow, but it's there, haha.
Thx good to know but I guess I want to wait for the new flight model anyway in order to learn flying otherwise I would just have to relaern everything again and I'm a lazy pilot better suited for civilian tasks anyway 😁
Exactly this. If I'm getting back into the game now, am I going to learn to fly just to have to relearn again in a few months?

How do they handle? And are they still due for a rework?
I never had real issues with the handling of the Vanguard. Saying that, the Vanguard and the Hornet sit right in my flying comfort zone but I found the Saber and Gladius were a little twitchy for me. I can put my nose on most targets in the Vanguard fairly quickly, which is a bad place for anyone to be.

The Vanguard is due at least a little rework, to make the module system work and to bring things up to the current standards, but it should still fit in the same speed and maneuverability area it is now with lots of bang out of the nose. In the Aegis day video they called it tweaking, but since the Warden module mesh looks to be part of the hull mesh, it is definitely going to have to spend a bit of time in rework.

And in Quantum the Vanguard is very, very fast. It gets from Olisar to Hurston much faster than the Saber, the Hornet, or the Cutlass, (They take, about 1.5 times longer to make the trip) while carrying enough fuel to make the trip 4-5 times without refueling. If things don't change longer trips are going to be much nicer in the Vanguard.

It will really come down to what you are looking for, Dogfighting? Escort? Intervention? There are many roles a fighter can fill and different playstyles. Long range only a few options stick out Vanguard being one, me personally I will not be looking to go out 1v1 or 2v2 dogfighting I much more prefer an escort type scenario in a fleet or small groups so depending on what you want to do in a fighter will narrow the choices down.

Great answer. Is all about the role you want and the platform for the fighter. Long runs vs short runs. Flying out of a carrier or a planet? Or like some have stated the Arrow is a mere LTI token. LOL! Skill comes to play also ...

Great question, and great answer. With the new flight model, and the ever-changing gun load-outs and balancing, I think your best bet is to try to best identify which fighting style you prefer (dog-fighting or zoom & boom), then get a couple of CCU's for a couple of ships at either the light, medium, or heavy range (or 2 of those 3).

The one thing for certain with the new flight model is change. Having said that, they made it pretty clear that the Alien ships will handle more like the 6 DOF we currently have in the game, and that the human ships are going to have more "thrust from behind" if you forgive the porn allusion, ha ha...if you think you might like the 6 DOF flight model, definitely throw your wallet at an alien ship or two.

3.5 is also adding five more ships and six ship reworks with the flight model change, so be sure to look those over while they can still be purchased.

Alot depends on your personal flight style as well. The Gladius and Saber, which I spent quite a bit of time in the cockpit a year ago, and a little time on Aegis Day, and the little bit of time I spent in the Arrow, are a bit twitchy for me. I overshoot putting my nose on target all too often. Their fragility combined with my overzealousness on the stick is a bad combination. With the Hornet, Super Hornet and the Vanguard the nose goes exactly where I intend to put it, every time.
