As I understand it strafing will always be relevant but won't be so aggressive in most ships; I'm guessing it'll be more like the strafing in the Egosoft X games which I also dual sticks with.

Strafing will change for most ships. Xian and other alien influenced ships are suppose to have full 6 degrees of propulsion while most of the human ships will have strong forward thrust and weaker lateral thrust with the intention of weaker weapons and armament of the alien ships over the human ships and thus create distinct behaviors for each ship. They also were talking about how they are playing around with the larger ships being flown by mouse clicks.



Even after we see the new flight model its still going to be a lot of theory crafting as they adjust it to make it work with in their stated vision and our feedback.
Mouse clicks? Please explain?

While I get what you're saying, I think that is a different issue. The rotation rates--yaw, pitch and roll--are all a function of the maneuvering thrusters. All well and good. If however you could use the main engines for asymmetric thrust, forward and/or reverse; one supposes you could spin a craft in space where it doesn't need control surfaces, like a top. You'd get huge rotation rates, and if you were seated near the center of the spin you wouldn't get much force causing blackouts. So would be great but as Toys has said--no asymmetric main thrust. That does put the kabosh on this idea. I was just asking because one of the HOTASs I was looking at has a very nice split throttle and it made me wonder whether it had a real application in SC. Seems not. C'est dommage. See Saitek S55 and S56 throttles (and the X55 comes in TEST colors!):

you could use 1 side of your split throttle to control Prospector mining laser operation.. if you are going to do mining that is.

Just a thought and who knows how many more uses such a split throttle may have in the future.

My understanding with the new flight model is that we’ll control both throttle and acceleration independantly. Each mapped to the two throttles i would think would work great.

I'm not super interested in mining, but that would be a great way to control a tractor beam. I've no idea when that is going to be enabled, but there is a Tractor listed for the Kore, and there are half dozen other ships that would certainly benefit from one or two--Reclaimer, Vulture, BMM, all the Hull series, etc. I'd like to think there would be one in the bay of the Carrack, Polaris, Idris, etc.

I do recall discussions about how smaller ships can't tractor larger ones without doing themselves damage, so I know it is planned to be a thing. I haven't heard word of tractor dynamics in game in ages, but who knows, maybe we'll see something with the next patch releasing the other Reliants?

A 180 degree turn... is actually possible.
Well this is all moot since as Toys said, there are no plans to permit split thrust. However just saying, birds like the Vanguard have open fronts to their engines because they are supposed to be able to generate reverse thrust. If you reverse the thrust on one main engine but not the other, this would produce in real world physics, the greatest rotation the craft could generate. Using main engines for maneuvering thrusters is not new. If you saw Serenity and the "Crazy Ivan" they pulled for a turn and burn on the Reavers, you have an idea what we're talking about. The Lancer ought to be able to do the same thing, and again, c'est dommage we can't use split throttles. You can't do this in atmosphere in a bird that uses lifting and control surfaces, becasue those only work when the bird is moving in the forward direction. In space however, or in atmo in a bird that is a flying brick and doesn't need control surfaces, reversing one of two off center-line engines would be a real kick, and a great way to roast you some Reaver.

G-force is a concern no matter how close you are to the center of a turn. That's what dizzy is. Just the couple of millimeters from a turn's center you are still subject to bigger than enough G forces to cause a reaction.

BUT!

You know, after watching that video clip... it should be possible to do that in SC. The turn is the only hard G's... but we can do that already in uncoupled mode. The acceleration in the other direction doesn't occur until the turn is complete. I don't think you need a main engine reversal to do that either, right now we can turn pretty quickly as long as the retro's aren't ruining your surprise. I don't think I'd casually hold on to something at ~ 400 Mph or so, but that's artistic license in a movie. The game's physics don't appear to be broken by that move.

Well dizzy you will get based upon your rate of rotation, and that can get to a virtual pilot! but the actual forces that cause blackout are inertial, so you can't expereince them from flying online, and they're a linear function with the radius of the curvature, so the further you are from the center of rotation, the more forces you will experience.

This is also why I don't like the HammerHead. Most SC ships make sense in some measure. Even the alien ships make sense after a fashion, you just need to understand the guiding principles. The HH really does not make sense. The center of rotation is where you want the bulk of your mass in a ship, so it can be caused to rotate easily. Moving it out (larger than neccessary radius) makes all that mass resist rotation as a linear funciton of the radial distance. So where you want your mass for good rotation rates, the HH has none, and where you do not want it, is where the twin hallways and other wasted space is.

I would rather have had a Scimitar, and really the HH was stolen from the Scimitar. I think they gave it the twin hallways and dopey layout to hide the fact they were stealing. Someone tell me, would you rather have the HH or this?

I agree with you on maneuverability that you want the bulk of your mass as close as you can to the center of rotation. But on larger ships were maneuverability is already greatly reduced having the turrets located on arms adds to its capability by increasing their firing arc which on a anti fighter frigate such as the hammerhead is a good thing.
