The Vanguard variants certainly do present strong missile defence options. I love the ship. Yes it can be defeated, the idea behind this kind of ship is to travel in squadron defensive formations, with other ships - including an escort. Execute standoff attacks in support of another attack. It's not a purely offensive weapon platform, but it does have some stingers to ruin your day if you're unwary. Once you've launched missiles and other standoff weapons, and you're in a Vanguard, get the heck out of dodge. You've done your part, and honestly you're more valuable getting a new missile load than becoming a navigation hazard.

I mean of course, depending on which Vanguard variant you're flying. There will be options.

The problem in gaming in general, I don't see much difference in SC, is most players are not team players. They want the highest score possible, even if that's just for bragging rights. They think as a lone player and not as a member of the team that they should be a member of, instead of flying into combat alone. They also think in terms of two dimensions. which is a distinct disadvantage in 3 dimensional combat. In the Air Forces of the world, this was something that was dealt with by late 1916 or 1917, which is when the body count started to stabilize. In SC this is not really going to happen, because they just respawn.

So when that Hornet harrasses your Connie as you leave that moon, with a full load and shy 335,000 UEC (it's a future scenario) your ability to grow a Snub fighter is going to pay off. While your opponent is trying to assess the threat of the attacking snub fighter, launch him a few reminders about the content of your missile bay. You also have some crew members that can man the two turrets. That's not a bad way to defend against a lone fighter, or even a pair of half bright light bulbs. I'd say the Connie is getting a bad wrap right now. It was not build to compete against the Mercury, they are in the same size range but have different strengths and vastly different roles.

I think of it less like a heavy fighter than as a Fighter-Bomber, meaning less like an F14 than an FB111. Very few fighters carry S3 missiles, and IIRC, all of the Vanguards can carry 2 of them (not counting the internal S5 bays of the Harbinger.) That means they can destroy many targets before even entering into dog-fighting range. Fighters can't do that.

I think there really is intended to be a big leap between S2 and S3 missiles, and you can't appraise the Vanguards without thinkiing about that. I think the page on them still boasts they have the quickest missile lock time of any craft? Something like that. Also note, the Sentinel's difference with EM warefare is not that it carries spike missiles. I think anything that can carry an S3 missile can carry Arrester IIIs. The Sentinel carries a pair of S4 EMP missiles. One supposes that is very different than a spike missile, and might disable more than one ship at a time. We'll find out next quarter!
Can't freaking wait to see what the do with the rework and beyond. My Sentinel is ready. Ha.
The Vanguard is okay but compared to other heavy fighters (F8) it's drastically under-gunned these days... I legit forgot it had the turret, so if I could swap the turret out or slave it to my sites maybe it would get some of its teeth back...? But until then, the Connie takes it.
Pray for new weapons with the rework.
I have to say I like the idea of the Vanguard as well, but not it's current firepower. I had a decision to make this past Fall, and single purpose fighters did not win.
They didn't win for me either. Which makes me sad. But I still have my Sentinel.
I use my Vanguard for a lot, I do all my delivery missions in it, as it has the fastest size 2 QT drive in the game, 3rd fastest overall. And with the shield buff in 3.5, it's a BEAST!

I am sure the Starrunner will be awesome but can't vote for a ship I haven't flown yet
Can't wait for 3.5 live so I can play with mine.
I'm hoping the variants are cool...I'm also wondering if the Vanguard engineering station will be useful. If it could support the engineering station, you could have roles for 3 people: pilot, turret gunner, and engineer. Back in 2.6, you could shift the shields around based on where you were being attacked...this could really be a huge benefit for combat!
So much potential. It's actually exciting to see what they'll do with this beast.

Yeah I try to like the freelancer but the interior design is such a mess it really need to be redone inside.

I love the MAX outside as the MIS but soon as I get inside I crinch and hair stand up in the neck..

The interior space is so badly used but that is IMO...

and the automated doors inside ships bug the hell out of me they make no sense, just leave em open and privat quarters always manual and close dooor to manual when ships are in combat situations.

CHEERS!

I'm the same, I really like the look of the Freelancers, and had a DUR, but just can't get on with the interior! Personal preference and all...

Same boat with me, lads. The DUR was my second love, right behind the Cutty. She was everything I wanted in an explorer. But the interior was just so damn uninspiring and boring. Painful even.
So sad.

Nothing beats the sound of the firing mechanisms of the Tali engaging and disengaging, knowing how much power is behind it. Sometimes I just walk up and down the corridors drooling at those size 9 torps. ;) Also, when they introduce the modules for it, I think its going to be that much better. Oh, and it was the single ship that I saw someone showing off in a hangar on youtube that got me interested in SC in the first place. Did I mention it has one of the fastest QT times in the game so far? Tali ho!

I am still intrigued by the option of loading an Absolution Distortion Scattergun fixed on the nose of the Vanguards. All the 'Guards are most vulnerable at close range where a true dogfighter can use its agility to get away from the Vanguard's nose, but the scattergun fires across an arc, and it does so much distortion damage, that if only say 1/5 of the shot lands, any small target is still going to be disabled. The mere fact any given 'Gaurd could be carrying one, ought to make dogfighters think twice about closing on them.

Check out this guy flying the Absolution on a Warden. The blue flashes are the 4 lasers in the nose. The Absolution is a red flash and it looks like every time he uses it against a Vanduul, it's a one-shot kill.

'Tali is getting a touch up for SQ42 :)
