What do you do for a living?

TEST Squadron seems to be the most eclectic community I've ever been a part of and I was curious about what you guys and gals do while you're not trolling and shitposting on the forums.
This question comes at a time when I'm considering a career change, because I realized I'm falling out of love with what I do / what I've been doing for the past 5-6 years.

I'll start:
I currently manage the finances of a small company that teaches professional qualification courses in the beauty industry: medical aesthetics (like botox and lip fillers), permanent make-up, and stuff like that. Although the industry is all about glamour, there's nothing "glamorous" about my job. My job is basically staring at spreadsheets all day.



What's something interesting about your career? Do you love what you do?

I work as a machine operator (furnaces and forklifts etc) in the Royal Mint, well paid and the most 'important' job ive done i guess. Been here 10 years and got about 30 left before retirement lol....i could do worse

I used to troubleshoot and fix aviation electronics, like radars, radios, navigational aids and so forth. Currently a full time student, but will be looking to jump back in the job market as soon as I move back to the US.

I work big data , specifically the security side of things now. I love the work I do, nothing is cooler then flipping the switch and showing companies all their servers talking to China and Russia.

I was in the Army for nearly a decade.
For the past decade I've done software testing (manual and automated) and data management to support software testing on health services contracts.

I'm a Federal Police Officer. It's cool and all, but actually a pretty boring gig (mostly force protection). Safer than being on the streets and all that. Plus I work nights which means I get to watch netflix/amazon when not busy In total have about 6 years LE experience and another 10 with gov security.

That's what you do? You should totally hook up with some California "person" (gender is a very fluid concept here) and get your green card! Orange County is where you want to be!

Ok, me: I had no idea what I wanted to do growing up. Went into the military (they paid for my college), and while in the Marine Corps, I met so many "interesting" people that I decided to become a psychologist! I've had several "career" changes while working as a psychologist for a large, state psychiatric hospital system...went to become a supervisor, now currently doing data analysis/statistical analysis for various projects and stuff (my undergraduate degrees was in math, so I find the statistical stuff interesting). In a way, I'm doing now what I always wanted to do...but didn't really know, asthis job didn't exist about 20 years ago.

In a former life, I spent 10 years in the US Navy doing the same job Printimus described above. Now though, I work on laboratory equipment used in Immunology testing. They are basically big robotic pipetting machines that also handle reading the test plates and tell you the values for whatever test they are running. Some of the common things that are tested for on these machines are Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, Lyme Disease, Lupus, Celiacs, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Rheumatoid Arthritis, and various connective tissue disease. Chances are if you were screened for an autoimmune disease your blood may have gone through one of the kinds of machines that I work on, if you are in the Southeast US then it probably went through one of the ones I work on daily.

For the vast majority of my life, I suffered from what could only be called "job related ADD". I've worked a ton of jobs from prison guard to running a strip club, HVAC installer to home building, private security to office manager and just about everything in between. I've been drawn to just about anything new and challenging.

Now, and for a good long while, I have actually been running a maintenance crew. I ended up with a maintenance job just to get some money between "real" jobs and stayed because of the variety. Every day I get to try something new and different. I'm never bored and that's what's kept me in this field. I've always enjoyed taking broken things apart, figuring out how they work, figuring out why they don't work, and fixing it.

Of course, there are jobs that I have enjoyed more. Now that I have a wife and daughter now though, some jobs are best left to the single guys...

Engineering/Theoretical Physics student stuck at bachelor for the last 6 years, which should only be the first 3 years of the program I signed up for.
For the last year I have studied part time and worked at a meat factory stacking and weighing boxes with sliced ham at a conveyor belt. The pay is good, as I do it through a recruitment company, but it is hard to explain how boring a should-be-automated job like that is. Especially when you have the knowledge and skills to design and build the robot yourself!
