I just caught this thread, and I was curious if everyone thinks we will actually be looking at schools shutting down and home quarantine?
We're OK for now (in US that is). I suspect if it gets worse, they will implement self-quarantines locally with schools & some businesses shutting down only in highly affected areas. I know DHS is still working through plans on that. I just got an email yesterday talking about how OPM had made a working group to look at what to do with the federal work force, and stated that feds who are subject to quarantine/movement restrictions in their areas can qualify for paid "Weather & Safety Leave", at which point they would essentially telework. I'm an emergency essential employee so I'm not sure if I'll get that luxury or not. 🙄

I just caught this thread, and I was curious if everyone thinks we will actually be looking at schools shutting down and home quarantine? We are stocking up just in case, but I'm hoping it doesn't go nuts. We also have a Disneyworld trip planned for June that we are debating about cancelling.
We are definitely running on a delayed reaction in NA.

The number of reported cases are going to rise very quickly over the next two weeks.

I would not cancel your Disney trip just yet. Worst case is that Disney shuts down and you get a refund, best case is the park is so empty, there will be NO LINES!

Unless you or your family have some underlying health issues, for most people its just going to be some flu-like symptoms.

School shut downs will likely happen in schools that are hit hard.

So, I woke up a bit late this morning, and I usually start going through the news on the virus, because im a no lifer right now and its more interesting than watching any tv show or the like.

Heres what ive gathered. Lots of "First case reported in [X location]" . Its spreading across the world at a rate that isnt worth reporting on every single incident anymore. Same with the US. Theres an outbreak in Washington state and a few more first cases popping up around the country. People are genuinely getting anxious, and the best way to describe it is like watching a hornets nest get a bit agitated. People are already going to the store to stock up en mass. Ive seen at least one picture of lines out the door at Costco in new york, and heavier traffic in our wholesaler just down the road. As I stated in the first post, its the socioeconomic impact that concerns me the most. My neighbor told me his grandaughter already got laid off because the company relied so heavily on China for their inventory, so their operations are gridlocked. Im sure the market crash will also have an adverse affect on peoples jobs if it keeps going the way its going. From what I understand, although the market currently looks bad, things are still good.

In the meantime if you find anything worth discussing please post it. Right now Its just interesting to watch how different regions are handling this, as no country in the world has the capacity or competency to properly handle this, and try to delay their healthcare system getting slammed. From what I understand, 1 in 10 infected in Italy are requiring an ICU bed. While the mortality rate "isnt that high" , its bringing a lot of people out of commission, even in the younger healthier population. The disease can still really cause a strong immune response in your lungs so its like getting a heavy case of bronchitis.

With Disneyworld, Sea world and Universal 20 minutes down the road, legoland 10 minutes away, Busch gardens on the opposite side of I-4, all the snowbirds being here for the winter and having a ton of nursing homes because its where all the old people in the country come to die, im waiting to see how our area will handle this when it comes. With millions of national and international tourists coming here a year (Example: Schmunkle), I feel its inevitable. All my family is over 70 and my aunt is in her 80s and leaves the house to go shopping every day out of boredom. She will absolutely not stay home because you cant tell her anything. Plus the cherry on top is Florida man. Florida man will find a way to fuck us as well.

Life wont change much for me, but for some I can see it absolutely affecting their lives in the coming months because people are dumb and wont change their hygiene habits. Between Orlando, Lakeland, Tampa and all the hospitals in between, Im assuming based on my past experience of working EMS and transferring patients between them, we maybe have close to a thousand ER beds, and Even less ICU beds. Most of which are already close to capacity because its the flu season. Old people will go to the hospital for the smallest thing. If they show up, they may not get COVID19, but they might contract some other disease by just being in the waiting rooms. Probably influenza or rhinovirus and the like.

The logo is real, but it's a different company in Shanghai, not Wuhan.

Reporting from Hungary, Eastern Europe:

We have Zero (officially) reported cases yet. We have 15 ppl outside the country who have been infected. No arrangements were made to return them yet.
I think we are already compromised, we just don't know it yet cos of the long incubation period (here it's 2weeks officially, 26+days according some other sources)

The first wave of panic just hit here in the last 2-3 days. I've been to do the weekly shopping and couldnt find a single piece of disinfectant soap/hand sanitizer.
Only a temporarily out of stock sign.

Masks were out of stock for a over a week. I have some reusable lab grade masks thanks to a relative that I keep for my hobbies (working with paints and such). Not that it makes much of a difference, apparently the aerosolised virus will get through most of the low grade ones you find in drug stores, and mostly because ppl don't wear them correctly. (According to official statement)

The cans section (pictured, 2 shops), rice, and for some reason salt and flour sections were raided as well. Those shelves are normally overflowing with stuff.

Ppl here have absolutely no friggin clue what they should stock up on for a situation like this (buying tons of flour is useless when you have no power/gas to bake it into something edible...), so they buy everything that for some reason makes sense to them. Cans of corn, nah.. Cans of beans, yes. Why??? You can't make a Mexican beans dish without both! lol Also they left a lot of the lentil. Raided the frozen meat section as well. What do they think will happen to frozen sruff if the power goes out?! No sense...
I have some ready to eat food cans and disinfectant already so shouldn't be an issue. It's pretty normal in a post-socialist country to keep some backup. unless it takes months to get new stock, it shouldn't be an issue.

What I'm actually worried about is our healthcare system. You have all seen in real life or on Tv shows like ER and such, where the waiting room is so full of ppl that you cant fit a needle between them right? Now, imagine that taking place in a dilapidated horror movie building or like in video games ( like Outlast). Now remove all but one of the many nurses and doctors that you usually have running around treating the patients.
That's how our hospitals look like on a regular summer day when the worst disease going around is sunburn.
Now imagine what will happen when shit actually hits the fan. It won't be pretty, and with a toddler and 90+ y.o. grandparents, it makes me kinda worried.

Which is bad!

Stress increases the chance of catching a disease! Chill out as much as you can, eat a bit healthy (no, steak twice a day does not keep the doctor away), and practice general good practice of washing your hands, not touching face, the usual.

One practice that is not common but worked over the years at my old studio is not shaking hands, but fist bumping instead! You usually touch yourself with the inside of your hands, not the outside. It's a very slim difference, might not make any in this case, but it worked for us, even in flu season (and nnot sharing keyboard and mice, those are really dirty things)

Anyone knows anything official on how long the virus stays alive on surfaces? All I could find was 2days to a maybe a month, which isn't really helpful.
I got some packages arriving soon, some from Shenzhen even. Should I douse them in chlorine if they were in transit for over 2 weeks?

Something a bit more fun to end on:

Once things start ramping up here in japan i bet its going to be empty like that and no one working at the grocery store. People panic to easy today when i took my kid to his school the teachers made me wash my son's hands for him before he could do anything(normally they do this themselves) and they were asking Does he have a cough? I'm like a cough? are you serious? yeah he has a cough but im not keeping him out of school because he has a cough if he had a fever yeah sure id go get him checked out and take the day off myself. In all they made me late by 5 mins due to all their excess nonsense and the stupidly backed up traffic because no one wants to take the trains.

Just placed an order for a reusable 3m respirator (7500) with filters, and several boxes of the disposable ones. Most websites say they're sold out with several month backlog. This one (SafetyNW) did not, so lets see if I actually get anything that I paid for >_> Edit: Apparently online reviews for them are bad, but I paid through paypal so I'm protected if they screw me.
Lol i wish i had read the 2nd part of your statement before you made it hahaha i just made an order through them now to.

The more reputable one I found is: Fastenal. But again, they are more expensive. USA Safety Supply was also listed as a distributor on 3M's site, but lie most sites they say it's a 2-3 month back-order on masks. Grainger is a huge company, and I'm looking into them now as well.

Do you know if there is a way to cancel the order from the other site by chance?(other than canceling via paypal if they take to long to ship) I already have 4 N95 masks and a P100 mask(do P100 masks filter out good enough also?) im just trying to get some disposable dust masks to use in public areas mostly for my wife since she works with old people who goto her dental clinic.

P100 are better than N95. The number is the approximate percentage of what it filters out. P100 are like 99.97%. That NW Safety seems to not answer anyone, so if you want to cancel I'd say best bet is to contact paypal. Likely I will end up doing the same.

I'll give them 2 weeks to make the shipment if they dont by that time i'll go ahead and cancel.

All this "first case in <insert state or city>" stuff is getting pointless.

By the end of next week it will be in most major cities.

I am seeing two different reactions to this in my family.
1) My mother has gone into full on prepper mode. She told me yesterday that she was buying two sump pumps for backup, just in case hers fails. I told her look, if you are worried about your sump pump failing, and you REALLY want a spare, just get one, after all, both are the same pump, you just need to keep one on hand and when you have the failure, you replace it and order a new spare. NOPE...I have to be ready for a year of not being able to get anything.... This is the same woman who has 2 years of food in her house that has probably expired, because she bought the food, but then was not eating and rotating it (like you need to to ensure it stays in the edible date range). She still buys fresh food for the week and lets the canned stuff sit.

2) My sister-in-law was on vacation at the Wisconsin Dells. During her trip, one of her sons spiked a temp of 103.5 Instead of cutting her trip short and going to a doctor, she stayed. Worse, because her other son might miss out on the fun, she took her sick kid into the waterpark area of the resort she was at and let him lay on a lounge while his brother played. By her actions, I wonder how many other people will be sick in the next week or two?

Because of people like my sister-in-law, you will almost certainly get sick with Corona virus in the next three years. Because of people like my mother-in-law, I see a lot of other people getting sick with food poisoning. I don't know which will be worse....

It's business as usual in NYC even with the 1 one case.....the regular flu has killed more people already than this shit beer flu

Regular flu will still make its rounds this season, and has a 0.05% death rate.

COVID-19 is just starting, and had a 2.9% death rate at its epicenter in China, but dropped to 0.4% elsewhere.

Yes, regular flu has killed more people, but COVID19 has not hit the US yet.
