Actually right now, you don't! Main engines on the Cutlass and Hornet have ZERO impact on the flight model. In fact the ships accelerate faster due to less mass! Arena Commander is funny like that.

Yes manuvering thrusters are the single most OP thing in the game still in the long run engines may help when the nerf o doom hits them

I'd say I got pretty far without engines or thrust... or lift of any kind. Nothing but raw defiance of physics.
