Excellent as always Sunder.

This is less of a review of the Hull series, but as of the cargo ships as a whole.

I hope that with the Hull series being the new "bulk freight champion", CIG will be more comfortable letting the other hauling ships have their own niche.

For example:

Banu Merchantman can be the "Deep Space Trader". Faster, more armed and armored than a Hull series, it can move smaller amounts of higher valued cargo with less fear of being bothered. The storefront/trading room floor is a bonus.

Freelancer can have the best overall sensors for a cargo ship, being that its also an exploration ship. Also much faster than anything bigger than it, with enough firepower to make smaller craft think twice before engaging it. This lets it slip through "roadblocks", avoid baddies, and carry cargo more securely and quickly than a Hull A or B.

Starfarer has the unique ability to refuel in flight, and will probably be one of the only ships with the onboard refinery so you can process fuel as you gather it, unlike a hull series which is going to be strictly carrying it.

Constellation Taurus has good defense (manned turret + gimbaled guns + missiles) and an ample cargo room. I dunno a good niche for this to be honest since the Constellation is so jack of trades already.

Caterpillar can be just as modular as the Hull series with the cargo modules, with more of a focus on armor and boarding over raw cargo space.

And uhhhh thats it?

Perhaps it is easier to manually load cargo by "gravity guns" when cargo space is little more manageable. I imagine HULL-C/D/E needing some kind of orbiting space station specialized just for cargo handling. Cranes & loader robots manned by players or AI this would take some time. With Taurus you could just land directly to a planet and load it by yourself . When HULL is still being loaded perhaps you are already making another beer run with Taurus / Max / etc...

I think the hull c d and e are beautiful.

And why is no one talking about the billboards? Think of all the fun we can have

The Hull series is no just for cargo anymore... Question. What is the deadliest close air support, anti vehicle, anti what ever in the US Air Force? It's the C-130. The Specter. With the ability to add modules this class of ship could do lots of things. troop carrier, fleet point defense, fleet hospital ship, and much more. Now in deep space a large cargo ship is a must. The hardiest part is getting it out there, taking a large defensive fleet, and getting it out in an emergency, I.E. bug out is next to impossible. I know of a lot of freighters left in 0.0 space after a bug out. But the Hull is a different animal, it can fold up into a smaller ship with less mass and very big engines. there is the advantage of the Hull series cargo ships. The more I think about it the better I'm liking it. Just my two cents.

with the massive size of the Hull-E , It makes me wonder if capital/super capital jump will be hard to find, or at least will need dedicated explorers to always find you new routes if the jump points are not static in nature. ( like wormholes in eve)

I wonder if the Hull E with its enormous cross section, engines and power plant will be spotted across a system by pirates with cataracts

So if its modular that im thinking, TEST could use those shipping containers filled with explosive materials and possibly us them as TEST bombers.

...But this feels very forced to cut down all those ships to a quarter of their previous capacity in order to promote this series as the premier hauler ship...
The capacity of the ships isn't changing, just the unit of measure.

A yard is 3 times longer than a foot; a cubic yard is 3x3x3, or 27 times the volume of a cubic foot. If the former capacity were given in cubic feet, and you changed the units to cubic yards, you would have 1/27 as many units of measure for the same volume.

We have 1/4 as many Standard Container Units as Freight Units, so we can calculate that an SCU is 1.59 times bigger than an FU in each dimension. ( I googled, 'cube root of 4' )

We know we are dealing in volumes from the CIG video that shows loading guns into an SCU, and the WIP illustrations showing how SCUs are loaded in standard ships.

If you need the protection of an armored hull for your cargo, use a standard ship. If your'e hauling commodities, use a Hull Series.

Would like a source verifying this. If true then great. I'm very happy then. If its not like that then....damn.

IT stands to reason that it is a volume measure. There is no weight in space, only mass. More mass, slower acceleration/deceleration from the same amount of power, is all. So a ship can't be 'overloaded' - the only limit is volume/attachment points.

Greetings Citizens,

We thought we’d try something a little different with the Hull series: we’re focusing on a different model each day, collecting all the existing art and fiction and answering some of your questions wherever possible! Tomorrow, we’ll highlight the Hull B, Wednesday the Hull C, Thursday the Hull D and Friday the Hull E. Let us know in the comments below if this is helpful, and we’ll look at similar posts for future concept sales.

“Can the hull ships carry smaller starfighters (packed or configured as cargo) such as the Super Hornet?” – queetz
Yes! Spacecraft can be broken down into their component parts for transport, or carried in their completed forms aboard larger Hulls. There is also a ‘midget fighter attachment’ being developed for the Hull E which will allow it to drop and recover escort fighters in exchange for cargo space."
