Explanation of what happened on reddit these past few days

For 95% of you, this is not important, but if you are curious as to why r/starcitizen was set to private mode yesterday, its because of this:

- There is a subreddit called AMA (ask me anything). Celebrities do AMA's, this is coordinated by a reddit employee and the mods that volunteer on that subreddit.

- Reddit employee got fired for some reason, no explanation. r/ama loses their collective shit since she was instrumental in running the show and everybody loved her.

- Mods of large subreddits have pent up anger over reddit admins not giving them essential tools in running their communities. Reddit did not even have its own mobile app until recently, forcing everybody to use 3rd party tools and software.

- As a form of protest, large subs decided to flip the switch to private to screw reddit out of essential traffic. Mods from other subs all decide to join the circle jerk even though the members of their subs are 100% disconnected from the drama, but it is done as a show of solidarity.

- r/testsquadron remained online and was flooded with k-pop because I threatened to keep posting it daily until Seung came home. He took the bluff and got his Korean friends to post more k-pop than we could handle.

- I drank a Redds Apple Ale, it was delicious.

Important to note however, the r/iAMA pretty much said "fuck you" to the Reddit Admins, and cut all ties with them. Reddit the company cannot get AMA's any more (rumors have it they fired Victoria because she objected to some "paid AMAs" or ones that were obviously PR spins), and any person that WANTS to do an AMA now has to do it through the volunteer mods on r/iAMA.

I help mod a 4000ish person sub on my alt account, and the mod tools are complete shit.

As for the paid AMA rumor, here is the irony:

I have no problem letting an ad load up on a site that I visit every day, if my $0.01 helps their bottom line, so be it.

If paid AMA's were going to be a thing where an aspiring young writer is paying to do an AMA about a book he wrote, why not?

Nobody forces you to read it and reddit needs revenues, they are a business, not a charity.

and now Dolvac and others are working on a replacement for reddit and are looking to poach from the 50,000 strong community. i'm wondering how long before they put up ads or sell "Dolvac owns our content" t-shirts to monetize what he thinks he has the right to hold hostage (all the content the 49,999 other people shared freely themselves.) there's a lot of uzi drama happening right now.

i'd love to be able to exploit this situation for lulz. i'm going to make my own reddit alternative with hookers and blackjack and spam it around promising that content won't be held hostage and used to extort the host. i certainly didn't share anything on reddit for Dolvac to use to aggrandize himself.

I didn't take away that that was what he was doing, but I fully support a TEST based reddit alternative with booze, and hookers and k-pop porn (DON'T JUDGE ME!) I genuinely got the impression that they were genuinely just taking precautions should the worst happen to reddit.

I wondered when this would crop up on the forums. I love reddit, use it everyday, it'd be a shame to see it break down. As Montoya said, though, everything's basically back to normal now, in that the subreddits are pretty much all back online. It'll be interesting to see what happens in the next few days/week.

I agree the mod tools suck, but I think their more out of date than anything.
