According to FiendishFeather's findings, you actually can park a Merlin in a Freelancer MAX if you can somehow manually make the wings fold up.

Yeah I know. If you notice when you're close the the ground the wings fold up before landing. My though is we could hover a meter off the ground or so and slowly decoupled strafe it back into the MAX without allowing the wings to extend OR we could just slam it in there until it fits. Either way.

Also don't get your hopes up too much yet. It sounds like the Tali may be the only multi-crew (if you don't count Cutlass) available at launch of 2.0. The Connie and Freelancer will follow soon™ after.
