great soundtrack indeed, and the game gives you option to load your own soundtrack too.

How much does this 2d play a factor

you dont have to worry about Z axis. you cannot move up and down the system plane, when aiming on fast moving targets, the game help you shooting up and down. most of "capital ship" games are choosing this model, as it gives that naval strategy feeling... even on games like Fractured Space or Dreadnought where you can move up or down, you dont pitch up or down.

How much does this 2d play a factor

Been watching a LP on YouTube and the 2D is a factor, but they impose it well enough to not be THAT much of a detriment to gameplay. Everyone on the same playing field, as it were. There is an 'illusion' of altitude, but still no "up" or "down" strictly speaking. Here is a view of some controls to give you an idea.
