Am I the olny person here that likes eve? the game is dying, no question. But it's a wee fun filler until multiship/universe launch at least is it not?
Why would you say the game is dying?

Eve does a lot of things right, I have not seen any other game that gives you such a sense of personal loss when you lose a ship.

I have also never seen a game that gives you as much stress as Eve does.

I tried Eve 5 or 6 years ago, had no clue what was going on and quit after 10 minutes.

I tried Eve again last night and actually payed attention and now I'm somewhat hooked.
.
I keep telling everybody that TEST Squadron has nothing to do with Eve, now you are making me look like a liar!

Haha I get it and watched the video where you clearly stated this TEST has nothing to do with that TEST, but, my local - real life friends would never give a game like EVE even a chance. So I came on here to see if there's anyone out there like me looking to play.

My experience has been probably dull so far compared to any one elses. The most action I've seen has been while mining an asteroid a veteran player monitoring New Player chat came up to me and orbited me for 2 minutes. Awesome.

I looked on the forums this morning to see if any of you guys are still on Eve and you guys are making me feel like I just got hooked on crack.

Anyone seriously still play though? And is there anything for a veteran player and lowbie to do together? Doesnt seem like it.
I would have still been a newb according to the EVE old timers around here. But from my experience if you find a good group it dosn't matter if you have been in very long there is some role to play. You should check out eve university. It is a good information resource and a good group... nothing like this group of course.

Thanks RipVanDan,

I tried to join up to Eve University in game, but wasn't aware of their website. I was hoping to learn some things from them. Dont want to even try PVP yet. Had some trouble with NPCs!

I highly recommend EVE University. They are very good at what they do, and have classes for just about every skill level and profession. Also offer free skillbooks and ships to a point. They will walk you through everything if you need it.

Can you walk around your ship?
LOL I remember when "station walking" was a big thing. Boy, did that flop. Like a big, floppy donkey dong, flop! But seriously, no, Eve Online MIGHT allow walking around in your ship as soon as Microsoft makes Excel support the Oculus Rift, so your character can walk around Spreadsheets in Schpaaayce Simulator 2003 (settle down fanboi's, "I keed, I keed!" ...OMG that game is over a decade old?!)

Indeed, but unless corp war rules have changed again, EUni is pretty much ALWAYS war-decced (as of a year or two ago, CCP made it trivially easy to wage PvP war). War-dec means there are other player-ran corporations which can engage you in PvP ANYWHERE (even inside the protection of high security systems), and for a starting player, that might be a turn off unless you know what you are getting into. If EUni is still war-decced all the time, I'd say join them only when you are comfortable enough to play the game and lose your ship without it hurting your wallet too much. Remember rule number 1: only fly what you can afford to lose.

Make not the mistake of confusing PvE with PvP. There are some similarities, but PvP has the potential of being a completely different experience than PvE. There are always exceptions, but generally, one example is that PvE is more about you (or a small group of friends) versus many NPC ships in a long, drawn-out battle royale. Emphasis is generally placed on sustained dealing and taking damage. Whereas PvP is closer to (note that I have less experience with this) scouting many systems for potential player-targets, setting traps to pull them out of warp, possibly engaging them in chat with ransoms after immobilizing them, (relatively) quick melees with lots of alpha / upfront damage, and always peeking over your shoulder to make sure you aren't next on the menu.

There are 31 flavors of each of these playstyles, but my point is to discourage you from making the same early mistake I made, and basing your "PvP readiness" on how you handle yourself against NPCs. Two different games, so to speak. In fact, it is not terribly uncommon for first-week players to be successful in PvP when they play as a team. For an example, look up what a "tackler" is.

And above all, it is JUST a game!!! Don't fly what you can't afford to lose, and until you know what you are doing, don't fly that big, expensive PvE ship out in PvP territory (ie. lowsec / nullsec). Good luck!

Confession time: I flipped a can once. JUST ONCE! (I was in college, and experimenting) Got an adrenaline rush, but felt like shit afterwards, and very tempted to return the mining lenses I looted out of them, LOL

Next week I might try .... (shhh!) "Not returning a borrowed pen!" hee hee

Thanks for your input. To be honest this does interest me a great deal but since I've only started yesterday I'm obviously going to have a limited understanding of what I can and can't do in the game in general. Even as far as just basic mechanics. Also, besides this, (this is just my opinion and from the very very outside looking in) it seems like any of the corps that do play like this wouldn't exactly welcome me with open arms and help me along the way of learning the game. I'm sure I could find a corp that would with enough research but, I sort of compare it to WoW which I played for a long time, with trying to get into a raiding guild, that knows the fights and exactly what to do, and doesn't really have time for people that don't. Can you confirm if it is like this? For what seems to be a pretty hardcore MMO, I'm sure it is.

@COUGARHUNTER I still play off and on. Derk Erter in EVE, add me and send me a mail there when you get the chance. I can help when I can. EVE University is the absolute best "starter corp" to go join. I run missions in Caldari space. Nuked my standings so I can't leave the Cal/Amarr areas (but that's okay, 1-2 billion a week if I play 4-5 hours a day, can't complain). Personally, gear up for mission running, Level 4s to be exact, and it's easy stable income. I'm somewhere between intermediate and veteran since I played it a long time ago, but had a 3-4 year off period.

As stated earlier, I think your best bet is to go with EUni for PvP fundamentals. Just realize what you are getting into: many deaths before getting "competent". And they understand this. In fact, I might venture to state that many of the hardcore player corps in Eve are not necessarily discriminating (as in the context of WoW raiding guilds) so much as their are protecting their assets from the nature of war and metagaming in Eve.

See, some players (NOT all players) view Eve as kind of a celebration of the "biggest bastard" contest, and there may exist a higher degree of security when applying to some corps. This is why some will demand to see your limited API key to see your ALTs. What you may see as "gear discrimination" in WoW would more likely be "covering their ass" in a player corporation. To a degree, people don't care as much if you are poorly equipped to handle yourself in a fight; they are much more concerned with whether or not you are a corporate spy, and planted there to sabotage the corp from the inside.

In fact, for this very reason, there may actually be heightened security due to the free month: anyone can make an account and infiltrate a rival corp. See how exciting and dramatic politics has become? :) Anyways, my point is, don't take it personally. People are just trying to protect their butts. My advice is to seek out Eve University, and ask more questions about how to get involved. And you are going to hear this fifty more times, so once more won't hurt: don't fly what you can't afford to lose.

OH THE PAIN! :) yeah, I did this on the Gallente side of things. I caught it JUST before Caldari had me on KOS. Now if I go back, I'll have to grind pirate NPC missions until I can get good with them, again. Man, Eve Online imitates life: no matter what, you're going to piss off SOMEONE!

Too much reading, make my head hurt. I doubt eve online will fall any time soon. The game is great. It used to have a very steep learning curve. They've simplified it quite a bit too help bring in new players. The universe is a massive persistent sand box universe. The entire economy is player controlled.

No it may not be for everybody. I quit because I've had to dial back several years ago due to finances. Over time everyone I knew was gone. So I just couldn't bring myself to really get back into it.

I highly doubt they're even slightly worried about SC. They've already got the mechanics for everything SC is trying to do. They have the same sim, Eve Online (no, not a dog fighter) but still fun in its own way; they have FPS, Dust 514 (been around for quite some time); they even have a dog fighting space sim (can't remember what it's called but it's designed for the occulus). They even have full character customization. With some coding I'm sure they could put it all together. Dust and Eve are all in the same universe and can achieve some cross game play. They were planning on some type of 3rd person type ops for salvage or whatever. The biggest thing to add to that is they have the funds and they already have the server capability. If they feel threatened they could have their version of SC up and running pretty quickly, I imagine.

EDIT: I seem to have written a small novel.
