Well, I understand that most of the capacity for producing regular RAM has been transformed into the kind of capacity for producing the memory grids huge AI farms need.
So technicaly AI does not steal our RAM. And subsequently AI is not inherently to blame for Hardware with inbuildt RAM like GPUs, Smartphones or gaming consoles to NOT be produced.
They guys producing RAM simply found a more lucrative way of making big bucks.
Like the AI craze.
The thing is, no one besides the hardware guys (Nvidia, Cisco, Crucial etc.) actually make those big bucks.
The investors sure don't. And they do start to get nervous.
And from what I hear from the states, regular people living in the vicinity of AI farms are not too happy with the price increase on the electricity bill either.
So question is what comes first. True AI with an actual value? Or Black Thursday.
In case of True AI we will surely end up with perfected production lines that can cater for consumer and expert systems both.
(Between Shodan, HAL and Skynet, what could possibly go wrong?)
In case of Black Thursday gaming will be the last of your worries as you see your retirement funds go up in ashes.
Those are both extremes though and I guess reality will happen somewhere inbetween.
I guess memory will be in short supply for a year or two but ultimately the market will normalize once the investments in AI dry up. And they already do.
Some AI farms had to shut down because they could not make enough money to pay the anual NVIDIA licences needed to use the NVIDIA AI hardware.
(You did not think it's enough to buy those overpriced AI cores, now did you?)
As for the game studios, they usually cater for the upper half of the currently available hardware. With downgrade options.
If the market stagnates so usually does their system requirements.
So as long as your rig is somewhat up to date and does not burn out you should be save until the 2030s.
Happy thoughts: Think of all the money you'll save from not being able to upgrade for 4 years! Now take a loan on your house and all considered it should be enough funds to buy that battlecruiser!
