I am not sure that I a remembering this right, but doesn't it state that the carrack has a repair shop in it? that would allow for some repairs out in the verse. plus the cargo capacity of the carrack. the ability to plot jump points and exploration, for me its a carrack and a starfarer all the way.

with all that being said a Dur would be your best bet. It's a jack of all trades ship. some exploration, some cargo, you can defend yourself with it. It will be easy on fuel. and you have larger fuel tanks to go farther out into the verse for those long stints into the void.

the only way your going to be nearly as cool as @Black Sunder is to get a prospector to mine. After all he is the mountain behind rock raiders.

If your wanting solo starter, why not a prospector?
