I think it's because for the longest time, the Super Hornet was the ultimate top dog at anything combat related you could pledge for. Now it has some competition. And as both are 2 person, dedicated combat craft, I think they are cousins, if not siblings.

The only way I think that the Vanguard can be a good value AND balanced is to make it a Heavy Fighter, emphasis on heavy. Make it decently fast (not as fast as Hornet/Cutlass), make it turn slowly, but give it a very good amount of firepower. Turns like a sack of bricks, but hits like a truck...
