It has been reported, but there has been no news that I am aware of. Do you have a link? They're not being very forthcoming with updates or progress, all I see is day 2 of the ticket slipping away. Edit: The loss also includes purchased ships or the loaner ships for those not in game yet...

All I can say, because though I've melted ships I've never done a buyback CIG is pretty darn good at increasing prices. (Oh, I just realized ... that might mean I have an LTI token somewhere.)

Easy solution... drink beer from the bottle, which should be kept in your hand while it contains any beer. Otherwise you're not going to get very drunk once they start flipping. Edit: Replace "bottle" with "can" as applicable.
