Weapons are disabled at Port Olisar. When weapons are enabled, stand under the turret and press F to enter it. Then it functions just as any weapon. It helps to have someone flying the Freelancer while you are in the turret. We takes turns.

@Blind_Owl OMG, I just watched an update about the fire on BBC.... That is truly a tragedy. Wish I could load up my Starfarer with water and help.
